I bought 1988TR with 48K miles and now it has 58K. I just got back this evening from a trip to Chicago (250 miles each way), and no problems.....it was 94 degrees, and humid. It was bumper-to-bumper on the way there, Friday, on 294.....no problem. The only thing that went wrong, in 4 years, was that I had to replace the main fuse panel (about $650). Look for rust.....you will need to raise the car on a hoist.......and look and push, with a screwdriver, on the bottom, just inside the door sill area. Check the full lenght, on both sides. It seems that water is getting in from the large door sill, that have no runoff. This is an easy fix, and the rust is just on a cover panel and not serious. |

scott my story is the same. i bought a 88 tr with 6400 miles on it( a garage queen and a divorce settlement case) it was fly yellow and the price was a steal.. i brought it back from kansas city to nj and spent about 7k on it (including tubis and a nakamichi stereo)to fix it up (master brake cylinder, hoses, oil, air filter etc,,, also my seat belts dont work as well as i have bottomed out 3 or 4 times , even being careful, it happens. but other then whipping it into shape, spending some bucks because of its "past garage queen status", no more money spent, and i enjoy it everytime i drive it and will continue to put miles on it... |

Ken, I'm 5 months into owning a 1990 TR that I bought with 30K miles on it. It had been garaged for the last 2 years, and as such needed some work. I've put 3K miles on it since I bought it, and would like to drive it about 10K miles per year. I've spent about 7.5K on getting everything sorted out, and now it runs really well. Most common problems are the electrical system, nonworking seatbelts, and broken front spoilers (I've gotten very good fixing mine while on the car). FYI Ferrari parts are all very expensive compared to any other make. If you like working on your car yourself, the TR is a fun auto to wrench on. I try and do all the minor stuff myself now, but at first I had a mechanic who specialized in Ferraris do everything, as I wanted to get the car fixed up and get a baseline on the performance. Hardest part is finding a good service guy who knows what he's doing. I went through 3 guys before I found someone who is great. HTH Scott

Ernesto - Very true! No offense taken - I was thinking we are talking about TRs/cars that are 10-15 years old (excluding later 512TR's & 512m), most cars I've seen or heard about - entirely from a subjective POV, well most of them have less than 30k or 40k on the clock - total. There are a few with 50k+ but much less than you'd think (if you don't believe me check out Ebay or AutoTrader or something), the number of cars with low mileage is unreal. Also I live in San Franciso, where the hills are plentiful and the stopsigns are more often than every corner. It's not a fun beast to drive in town. Last year at CI I met a man who owns a TR in Vegas, he was asking me about how many miles on mine I said "about 34" he said his too...later I found out he was talking hundreds, I was talking thousands. ok that's enough OT babble...I'll try and drive my car more Ernesto! or we can trade? lol -Ben P.S. had to go and have a look back at my last service note, it's been 4k in the last year. |

Damn Ben, you consider 2k a year driving it? No offense intended here. It is just that my 360 has about 1.5 years and has only about 8,000 miles. And I think I barely drive it... Ernesto |

Once I sorted mine out (major service then some electrical gremlins), it's been completely trouble free. And I drive mine (more than 2k year). -Ben |

I owned a Lusso for many years and expected high maintenance costs. I now own a '99 Lotus Esprit (I apologize) which gives me no trouble at all. I have been considering a Testarossa but, have been hearing horror stories. I would enjoy some serious discussion devoid of emotion, if possible, so that I can make a reasoned decision. |
