ACW, I don't see any reason to be ashamed for owning and driving a f-car, especially here in capitalistic USA where every individual has the opportunity to be successful. Obviously you earned the privilege to be a f-car owner due to your hard work, no one has the right to criticise you for that. Everyone has their personal reasons for what they're willing to share, I certianly respect that, just am turn-off by the guys who feel they are a more superior person just because they own a f-car and talk down to others in a tone like "if you had to ask you can't afford it".

Bottom line, what's the big deal?

Let's all enjoy and share our pleasures, I have no problem in letting my friends live vicarously through me, some are married with kids and a F-car is way to impractical for them now, but I love letting them test drive my car so they can escape from their stable family live for that brief moment. To me, it's just another car, if it breaks I repair it, if it's totaled, I replace it.

Chris,

I never answer this question because I'm somewhat ashamed of spending that much on a car. I just don't like to talk about it. This is really not arrogance, but rather discomfort.

Guys, i have to admit I'm typically one of those guys asking someone how much their car cost. The reason I asked is because I want to get an idea of the market value for that car in case I'm in the market for it and just plain curosity. To me, what's the big deal in telling a stranger what I paid for my car, it's surely not a big secret since market values are easily ascertainable.

I believe to give a sarcastic response or no answer at all perpetuates the myth that all f-car owners are snotty arrogant people. I just never forget the early days(up to a month ago) when I couldn't afford one and was always in awe whenever I saw one, let's not forget we were all on the other side of the fence at one time or another. There is no superiority in owning a f-car, just means you have deeper pockets.

Yeah, I was asked by a cop and neighbor how much the Mondial cost. Told them it's a trade-in, so go figure.

A guy at agas station was eyeing my 308 some years ago and said "What's it worth, about 150K?" I told him about 35K and there was a giant letdown look on his face. Way more exciting to see a 150K car than a 35K car.

the answers i usually give are
- no, my insurance doesn't cover anybody driving but me. this is true and normal in the uk, so no real problem there.
- on the 'how much did it cost?' question, i always answer w/ an eye roll and 'you don't even want to know' and they usually don't ask again. their imagination is better than reality !
- nobody has ever asked if it was a kit car, but then again around here we don't have those, and there are so many ferraris that the kit cars wud stand out easily as the fakes.

Thanks, I am kind of new to this world. There seems to be a lot of cool people you meet, and then there is the strange ones.

It's a strange irony that the real F-car owners are saying "yep... it's a kit car" and the kit car owners (I'd bet) are saying "no way man! this is the real deal!"

The public probably has a very odd perception of what a real Ferrari looks like based on this phenomenon! ;-)

My 308 is most commonly mistaken for (or called) a Mustang (must be the horse). And more than a few have asked how I like that 351 Cleavland engine....

It might be a regional thing but people here in the Seattle area tend to mind their own business. They'd check out the car from a distance. On rare occasions, one or two would approach me with questions at gas stations.

I've let all my neighbors and friends drive the 512TR. The grin factor is beyond belief and they invariably drive with much more caution than I would. How many people in this world EVER get to drive a ferrari? And yes, some have offered to let me %#*@? their wives afer the ride (I declined - sO far. no Victoria's secret supermodels or Playmates in the bunch). Take a photo of them behind the wheel so they can prove to their buddies that they drove a ferrari and you have a friend for life.
As for the kit car questions, just say "Yeah, it's really a fiero underneath and just smile. After all, YOU are the one with the ferrari.

I haven't had that happen, but the thing I always get from total strangers is "How much did it cost?" I think that's personal, regardless of what the item may be, so why do people feel they can ask a total stranger how much their Ferrari cost? I just laughingly tell them it's personal. Anyone ever get that?

When asked if it's a kit car, I always say yes. This happens at stoplights more than anywhere else. I figure when the light turns green, the truth will be revealed. No neighbors have asked to drive. If it's convenient, I give rides to most anyone who asks.

Anyone who asks if its a kit car gets told: Yes. Its based on a VW Bug. Amazing how good the replicas are isnt it?

Any friend or neighbor who asks to drive it gets told sure. As long as they know how to drive a stick and I am in the car with them, no big deal. Its well worth it to see the grin.

A total stranger? Uhhhh a polite no is the expected reply. Then he can go away calling you a rich jerk like he wanted too <g>
