this engine was in fact an experimental f1 engine. the experiment being how compactly a 12 cylinder engine could be built. the block holds two crankshafts one above the other. the black "blower" on top is the upper crank case. the lower crank is at the bottom with both cranks joined by the gear set in between. what looks like the "intake" runners going down to the heads are really the cylinders for the top bank. the four banks are arranged in a square. last time i was at the factory i spent about half an hour examining this piece because it was so different. i dont remember what year it was made also couldn't figure out what the combustion chambers looked like. anyway i ran out of time to take it apart.

The engine is from a 126CK, its a 6 with a single Comptrex supercharger on the top. There was a light thread about this car sometime ago. Note the 3 spark plug holes on each side. Its not a V12 or a Boxer 12.

Does not look too much different from my 1986 TR engine which I just put back in the chassis. The gear driven supper charger grabs one's attention, however.

It is 4 cam, 12 cylinder, and while someone suggested it my have a "narrow V", it looks flat to me. The timing belts and tensioners are identical to the TR. The valve covers are different, allowing for "mating" sparkplug insertion for adjacent cylinders.

My thoughts.

Looks about like $30,000 or more down the drain if one of those timing belts ever let go!

I beleive this is a six cylinder flat head or Boxer engine with some sort of explosive device mounted on top of it. It could be dangerous.

Not having much luck searching for more info. In the picture, there's a plaque in front of the engine. Perhaps an Italian FerrariChatter living nearby could go there and tell us what it says.

If going by the model designation, I'm guessing that the "F135" means Formula One 3.5 Liters.

Willis is correct: This is an experimental twin-V6. Kind of like what VW is doing these days with its narrow angle six, making a W12 out of 2 of them. But in this case, it's really 2 horizontally opposed V6's. There is a picture of it in the current Rosso magazine--the engine is on display at the factory museum in Maranello.

It's an experimental F1 engine. I was just relaying what was printed in the magazine. The article was about Galleria Ferrari, the museum in Maranello. I'll check the owner's site later to see if there's anything else on that engine.

Michael, it looks like a 12 to me. It has 6 intakes per side. What looks like only three spark plug holes appear to be oblong shaped which could hold two spark plugs entering the cylinders at an angle. And Tom, yes Ferrari used a 6 cylinder engine in the F1 turbo era, but is was a V configeration and not a flat.

Looks like an experimental, supercharged, 180 deg V-6 to me (based on the gear drive arrangement up front). My guess would be the open ports are for the exhaust out the top so the engine CG could be placed as low as possible in the chassis (if it's a pressurized intake scheme, the intake tract routing is less-critical) -- but I'm no expert.

Willis -- Was the displacement given? 412 HP out of a blown flat-12 doesn't sound very impressive to me.

It's the F135 DV6. A flat 12 made from two V6. 412HP. Found it on the most recent issue of Rosso Ferrari. :-)

Please help. We Ferrari neophytes on the Boxster board are having no luck with it.

Thanks!
