Actually, the Ferrari flat-12 is a V12 with 180 degree between banks--each crank throw supports two connecting rods; and 6 total throws.

A horizontally opposed flat 12 has one crank throw for each connecting rod; and 12 total throws--ala Porsche.

With fewer than 12 cylinders, the horizontally opposed engine has a ballance advantage--opposing cylinders are always moving in opposite directions, canceling out their respective imballances; and a slight disadvantage with respect to crankshaft stiffness. BMW motorcycles use a 2 cyclinder horizontally opposed flat twin, Porsche uses a 6 cyclinder horizontally opposed flat-6.

By the time you get to 12 cylinders, you can create 2 six cylinder engines on a single crankshaft with beautiful ballance and without the stiffness disadvantages of the HO layout.

Do not confuse the layout of the engine with the architecture of the engine. (please!)

Very true. :-) However I did not pick out Ron's license plate. ;)

: I just noticed I put V12 in my discription. Bah! A minor slipup! I must have been thinking of the 60 degree V-12 engine in the 250 Testa Rossa :p :

The TR is flat 12 not a v12.

Just wanted to know if anyone knows "Ron"? While we have plenty of Diablos, I have never (never) seen a Ferrari on the road in Stockton in five years and we have 200,000 people living here and I have seen this Ron in his TR about 10 times in the last week! lol! If he just bought it, I can understand. If you're reading this, how's it going? ;)

I have a for sale sign on my corvette and was saving up for a F355, but I have been thinking about getting a TR instead (I can buy that right now). I love the V12, and the looks of the TR, but I am on the fence. Nice to see one driving around. Gives me something to think about
