site for the endurance race is www.endurancekarting.com. it gives track locations etc. where are the tracks in Indy located? we'll be there this year and would like to take a few laps. have found a indoor track that's open 24 hours in Montreal. we'll be checking that out this june as well. i've been looking at some kart club sites, Woodbridge Kart club is a good one, lots of rookie info and a for sale listings. most club races have a senior class, both light and heavy.

Bill:

I'd do a Ferrarichat team for an endurance race. $300 for anywhere from 1/2 to an hours ride looks like a good deal.

Sounds like you guys have the beginnings of a fun karting adventure. You might also want to check out some of the 'rent-a-ride' deals. They advertise frequently in the small space ads in the back of Racer magazine. The events are run at various locations throughout the country. For about $295 per driver you can show up and drive a kart in a multi-hour race with three or four co-drivers. You can form your own team, or they can assign you to a team. It might be fun to get a Ferrari Chat team together. I've read an article or two by journalists who have participated, and it sounded like fun. I know a lot of people who are talking about doing it, but none of my acquaintances have actually done it yet.

The indoor tracks are fun, I driven both tracks at Indy. They are slower, but they give you some idea of what is needed for kart control. The tracks are very slick and you are in a constant slide. I road race my Kart so indoor is a different experience than driving around Mid-Ohio or Road America, but it is fun!

It takes me 2 hrs. door to door from Northern Westchester to Westhampton, with normal traffic.

This would be a cool thing to do.

This track on Long Island is right near my home. We should all meet up there for a day & rent the track and karts.

Has anyone raced on an indoor track? Last year, when I took my familly on vaction to England, I went to an indoor track and rented a kart. It is pretty fun cause the surface of the track is smooth. You can drift through some of the corners really easy. It was way fun. If you get the chance to drive on an in door track I recomend it.

Christopher:

Karting can be fun. I used to race motorcycles, but have gotten away from actively competing. I'm 15 years older than you, and about 10 years ago got seriously hurt when at 45 I got caught trying to be 25 again.

I don't plan on winning any 125 shifter races, but do plan on being reasonably close to the front at the end. I have access to Honda's factory team in Europe GP (motorcycle racing) and was able to procure a "A" kit for the 125 racers there. I wasn't able to use all of it, because it would be illegal, but I got enough to have a very substantial HP advantage over everyone. When I finally learn to drive this thing properly, I think I'm going to have some fun in this new venture.

Art, I agree at 41 I am not as willing to acept the risk as I was when I was 18. I think a lot of people assume they can spend thier way to the podium, but no amount of money can overcome the desire to accept the risks associated with winning. I still race, but I don't usually win and I know why. I am also involved with Skip Barber, but I'll let those individuals with the single minded desire to win, lead the pack, I am there to have fun, if I happen to not to make a fool of myself along the way, that's a bonus.

racing is different than going fast. A lot of people can go fast. Few can race. You have to get on the track to realize the difference. The willingness to get hurt in order to win seperates those who will and those who won't. I used to be in the former, I'm not in the latter. It was fun while it lasted.

My friends and I have 7 Karts, 3 Briggs and 4 shifters. They are fun, but it will also put a dent in your wallet. A kart and spare parts will run at least $10,000 and you will need at least a 24 ft trailer for equipment. You better figure each race with tires parts registration and travel will run about $1,000. I should also mention this is racing, not for the timid. I raced all over the midwest last year and we had at least 1 ambulance run at EVERY race. It is great for improving skills, and I reccomend it, but you might want to consider a driving program like Skip Barber, safer and about the same cost.

How do I find out if there is a track anywhere near me? (Westchester County, NY or Long Island, NY)? Also, is it possible to rent these until I see if I like them or not?

The price I was quoted for the 360 Challenge series was approx 180k to buy the car, and approx 20k per weekend during the season for support, fees, mechanics, etc. That's a lot of $$$$, plus the Challenge guys are NUTS. I've watched them race, and they are very aggressive, with some contact at many events. Not for me. Karting seems like a blast.

Another good site is ekartingnews.com. They have some good info and a classified section. Try to get a complete set-up turn key package. Usually cheaper and lots of extra parts, tires, etc. Good way to start is the Rotax max w/125 cc engine and no shifting. It's a spec class and they are pretty fast. You can go about 60 hrs before rebuild. Engine is sealed by dealer to prevent cheating. Check your local track and see what classes they run. Go for it and have some fun. Ciao.

Solly:

Looks like you got the information on the karts. I would, before you buy a kart, make sure that the one you get is competitve and that there are no big changes coming in the class.

I just started with a 125 shifter, and I can tell you that while they are cheaper than a 360 challenge, they are not inexpensive, if you want to be competitive. I have several sets of wheels, a spare engine, the stock engine had to be reworked, etc. If you want to be competitive you need a method to make sure that you kart is square and aligned at each event. Just like the big boys.

All told you can invest almost 50k into the sport if you want to be competitive.

I raced karts about 25 years ago and it was an excellent way to improve your skills.

I have heard so much about this. apparently Schumacher, Rubens, Barichello all participate in Karting to keep skills sharp. Guys at Ferrari dealership told me a lot of Challenge drivers are getting into Karting because it is so much fun and so low maintenance (Kart cost about 6k, as opposed to a 360 Challenge).

Anyone know how to break into this in New York? Where are the tracks or the schools? Anyone else in this area interested?
