You're confident that it is not the catalytic converter? In reverse, the smell of a new converter might waft into the passenger area. I know nothing of this car (don't even know if they have catalytic converters), but have had similar experience on U.S. automobiles with a sulfur-like smell. Jim Selevan |

It is DEFINITELY the clutch and the 550 does this all the time - in fact the 550 is well known for it - the smelliest clutch in the damn world. Nothing to worry about. |

It's the clutch--happens on mine when I try to feather the throttle & clutch in reverse. |

When clutches burn, you know its a clutch. Clutches really smell bad. I'm sure Ferrari clutches are no exception. |

I've had a similar thing happen in my 456M. In my case, it is the clutch. The first few times i tried backing up in the car, I got this really strong smell of burning coming into the passenger compartment. I've also had it happen in first gear when I got a little over-zealous on the gas pedal. What I've learned is that I don't really need to give the car any gas on starts until the clutch is fully engaged; I just let the engine management system keep the revs up. The engine starts to falter slightly as the clutch begins to engage, then it catches and pulls smoothly at a slightly elevated idle.

Ray: I've experienced EXACTLY the same thing and I would swear that I'm not roasting the clutch. That being said, since the second time it happened, I've been EXTREMELY careful not to apply gas, or to apply just a touch-the car doesn't seem to need much at all and it won't stall if you modulate the clutch. But I'd be interested in any further insights into this as I have to admit, it really psychs me out to have the passenger compartment filled with a burning rubber smell and not seeing any smoke coming from the tires. My take on this issue is that the 550 clutch is extremely sensitive in the reverse gear and we just have to get used to it. But, I don't think there's anything wrong with your car as I've asked my FNA dealer to check it out and he says that everything appears to be fine. I'd not worry too much about it and just be very gentle.

Could be that your roasting the clutch just a little, as it's in b/w being engaged and disengaed the pressure plate is slipping along rather than griping; seems like the likely culprit. |

Both times it happened i was backing the car up slowly keeping the clutch a little pressed, giving some gas therfore manipulating the power to rear wheels so i could back the car slowly through the driveway so as not to hit the curb. Usually when i am moving forward i don't have the clutch pressed while the car is moving becuase i am not concerned about making the car crawl along extremly slowly as i would while navigating a narrow driveway. |

You said that this happens sometimes, right? Questions: When it DOES happen, are you doing anything different that you can tell from the rest of the time? Also, when this happens, have you ever gotten out of the car and smelled under the hood? I can tell you that I am not familiar at all with this type of thing, but maybe clarifying what is happening will help some of those who have more knowledge to diagnose the problem |

Its not the smell of the tires i am moving the car too slowly for that i smell it inside the car around the passenger seat area. As if something is burning inside the car or under the hood. Someone riding with me asked if it was my hand-brake but that was fully dis-engaged. The smell is quite pronounced. I am just worried if something is not over-heating in the car. |

When you have it in reverse, after you let the clutch out, don't push the gas pedal all the way down. |

Sometimes when i am backing up my 550 i smell burning rubber. Than it goes away as i start driving forward. Doesn't have all the often just twice so far and always while backing up. Anyone else have this experience with a 550 or know what it could possibly be the cause. |
