I beg to differ about Wilson products... The Wilson Deep Red and fat shaft woods and drivers are good products, and not cheap either (the driver is $299)... You won't find those at Sears..

I still use the same old clubs from high school, Hogan Edge irons and Taylor Made metal woods. The days when shafts were steel and the heads were small.

Used Pings, 845s, Cobras.... anything but new Spaldings or Wilsons from Sears. Believe me James, you may not understand now but you'll thank us later!

Now schedule some lessons!

James,
Check out CLUBFINDERS.COM. I bought a set of Tommy Armour 845s irons from them and got a good deal. They have a great selection.

I think I am going to cruise the local garage sales today. My friend picked up a set of ping IS2 clubs yesterday for $150 and they are in quite good condition for being ,what he says, are 15 years old.

There are many used sets advertised on Ebay, a good way to buy an affordable starter set...

I currently work at a custom Golf shop for the summer before I pursue my MBA in fall.. We fit, customize, reshaft, restore, and do anything involving golf clubs... Anyone with questions just drop me a line... or If you live in the NY metro area and would like to visit.. We are located in a private home in Greenwich CT.. my email is [email protected]

For the golfers out there, here's a little humor. I can relate.... I caddied for 4 yrs as a kid:

List of Top 10 Caddy Comments:

#10 Golfer: "Think I'm going to drown myself in the lake."
Caddy: "Think you can keep your head down that long?"

#9 Golfer: "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course."
Caddy: "Try heaven, you've already moved most of the earth."

#8 Golfer: "Do you think my game is improving?"
Caddy: "Yes sir, you miss the ball much closer now."

#7 Golfer: "Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?"
Caddy: "Eventually."

#6 Golfer: "You've got to be the worst caddy in the world."
Caddy: "I don't think so sir. That would be too much of a coincidence."

#5 Golfer: "Please stop checking your watch all the time.
It's too much of a distraction."
Caddy: "It's not a watch - it's a compass."

#4 Golfer: "How do you like my game?"
Caddy: "Very good sir, but personally, I prefer golf."

#3 Golfer: "Do you think it's a sin to play on Sunday?"
Caddy: "The way you play, sir, it's a sin on any day."

#2 Golfer: "This is the worst course I've ever played on."
Caddy: "This isn't the golf course. We left that an hour ago."

. . And the #1 best caddy comment:
Golfer: "That can't be my ball, it's too old."
Caddy: "It's been a long time since we teed off, sir."

James, I'd stay away from the Sears Spalding clubs IMO. If funds are limited (I completely understand - like you, I had zero money when I finished college too), I'd STRONGLY recommend a set of used clubs. Get something like a used set of Cobra's or look into used Callaways.... but not used Spalding. Ask around at your local golf shop or check eBay.

You're right, golf is a fabulous asset as it relates to business. You really get to know people and build relationships when you spend 4 hours with them. Plus, it's fun.

Thanks for the sound advice guys.

I am just finishing university and have been told that playing golf is a good asset to have in the business world. It's tough to find jobs these days, and many of my fathers friends who can get me in contact with people in high positions keep inviting me to play with them.

Unfortunatly, I don't have much money to spend on clubs, and was looking at spending around 300 bucks (CAD) for a set.
I found a set of Spalding "select" model clubs at Sears today. They are regular price $600 and on sale for $300. My friend works there and can get another 15% off which makes the 11 piece set around $250.
The unusual thing is that both the irons and the drivers have graphite shafts!! Is this a good thing or a bad thing, as I have never seen a set of irons with graphite shafts before. Are there any pros or cons??

thanks for all the help

James, John nailed it on the head. I grew up playing golf, which was fortunate. I know that had I not, I would never have the time or patience to learn the game well now. Invest in lessons--it's a tough game to learn--and be sure it's something you want to stick with. Then, get fitted for a proper set of clubs. You will definitely tell the difference. These days, there's no limit to how much we can spend on golf stuff. I've just seen a lot of people do it backwards by buying all the gear, outfits, etc., only to later realize that they didn't really enjoy it. Have fun...

Hello James let me suggest the best advice I wish someone would have given me, but didn't. Spend more money on lessons than on clubs. Take at least 6 private lessons than some group lessons. I learned by just picking up clubs and hitting the links a person picks up to many bad habits.

If you are serious about the game, and you intend to stick with it, then buy a good set, perhaps after consultation with a pro or golf shop specialist. Tou can spend over 300 bucks for one club only ( a driver) and 400 more for the other metal woods, then about 700 to 1500 for a great set of irons. For the time being, stick with a good introductory set that feels good to you, and when you really get hooked, upgrade

Hey golfers,

I am going to start playing golf. I have only been on a course twice and to the driving range about 10-15 times.

I am going to buy a set of beginners clubs quite soon. Will I notice a difference between buying a $300 (Canadian price) 12 piece set of low end Wilson clubs versus a $400-$700 full set of higher end Wilson or other brand name clubs???

thanks for your help

My handicap is 12, established on a diffcult Pete Dye Jr design in South Carolina. If I had had instruction when I was younger I would have not developed all the bad habits. I hit balls almost every day and love the game. I just came back from Maui and played a couple of rounds there, shot 85 and 88. It was hard to concentrate as one round (88) was very slow). I could play golf every other day if I could find someone to bet with. It is cheaper than the stock market that is for sure. Sergio is a hot blooded Spaniard, and he adds a lot of color to a game with few colorful people. I think Tiger Woods is great, but note the events he does not participate in are poor in attendance. So waggles or not, as much as I hate to see them, he is good for the game. He'll grow up. Some like Daley take longer to grow up. Now back to working on my Boxer to get it started.....

My handicap is: "I cant play Golf"

no real, just do it for fun. My handicap is somewhere a consistant 25, sometimes 18, sometimes 36. All depends when the Beer-Cart is coming by and how often :-)

Arlie,
Obviously you are not a golf nut like some of us who think this thread has some merit. And that is 100% fine. Yet, is it necessary to be overtly negative about something other F-chatters enjoy? Why post?

Jim, let's see, I'm in the cheapest club racing class and it costs about $700 a weekend total. I usually leave for the race Friday at noon and don't get back until late Sunday.

Duck hunting I wake up at 3am and sit in 38 degree water for 6 hours.

Fishing can go 36 hours without sleep.

Ok, so my math was a little off, I guess it's the difference between liking what you're wasting your time with vs. golf, which for my more than a few times a year is a not.

I'm not much into golf, but I watched that Sergio dude and it took about 1 minute to figure out that it isn't just a "waggle" I think he has OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. He seems to do that thing with his hands the same number of times most of the time.

Stuart Appleby is active on BMWM5.com and is a very good guy! Beautiful M5s also.

For some reason I want to say that Darren Clark has a 355...and Davis Love has a rediculous tour bus that he sometimes uses to go from event to event. I think he somehow got a king bed into it!

Hey Rob, golf costs major money but car racing doesn't? I must be seriously overestimating the cost of racing. And when was the last time you had only 5 hours of racing when you add in drive time, prep time, etc etc. I'm in the top 20% of the worlds crappiest golfers, which mean 80% of people are better than me, but I love it anyway.

Hey Rob,
We should go play sometime. I have been having a hard time breaking 100, maybe you can hook me up with some lessons or give me some pointers. Must be nice to shoot 80 or 90 when you only play a few times a year:-)

I play to about a 16.3 handicap but it is slowly getting lower, I just don't play enough to get real consistant. My teaching Pro states I could easily be a single digit handicap.

I know Greg Norman has a nice little collection of Daytonas, Laura Davies has a 456GT, Miguel Angel Jimenez has a 550 Maranello, Davis Love last I read has a 328,and Darren Clark also has a ferrari (model unknown). My understanding is T. Woods has a Porsche 911 Turbo (I guess he doesn't always make the right decision heh??..ha ha).

I have a 13 handicap. Love the game but, it had become a major pain to play(to many 5+ hr rounds these days, what are folks thinking).

Regarding Sergio, he is hard to watch and does complain however, he has personality which is what a lot of the guys lack and he is only in his mid 20s. I like his aggressive style - like the old Seve.

I play a lot of competitive golf, state amatuers, smaller state level professional stuff. My handicap hovers around 0 to +1. About 8 years ago I had aspirations of turning pro and trying to make it on tour but even as blessed as I am those guys are so much better. My biggest thrill came last summer when I got to play in a celebrity event hosted by Fuzzy Zoeller down in Indiana. They paired you with a celeb, a tour pro and your other amatuer buddies, anyway our Pro was a guy named Dicky Pride who 5-7 years ago actually won a tourney on the PGA tour, anyway I actually beat him by one stroke the day we played and it brought up a lot of thoughts of what if....but hey my life is great the way it turned out no regrets =)

My dad's dream was for me to be a golfer. He had me on the course putting and chipping after I could barely walk. My half brother turned pro, never made the major tour, but is fairly well known for being the instructor for several tour pros in the early nineties. I won't tell you any names <wink>, but one is #1 the past few years. His name is Mike Wanamaker, someone on the board might know him. He lives in Costa Mesa and I think the name of the club he was at awhile ago was Big Canyon. I haven't talked with him in a couple years.

Well anyway, my story of failure and disappointing my dad happened when I was 17 and gave up golf to concentrate on swimming, which I did through college. Before 17 I traveled around doing junior tournaments, at about 13-14 I had a 6 handicap, which would medal me now and then on a good day, but usually I was missing the cut shooting between 78 and 82.

Man... swimming, hunting, fishing, and car racing are so much better. Golf is an evil sport. Quit now while you have a chance! It costs major money, takes major time, and usually puts you in a bad mood.

I play once or twice a year now and shoot between 80 and 90.

6 handicap here......I think that Sergio adds a lot to the game considering how animated and outspoken he is(even if he is whining at times). You could retract the top of his 360 Spider in less time than it takes for him to hit a shot. He really did catch a ton of flack from the crowd at Beth Page a few weeks ago. Maybe he needs to take to heart the meaning of a "New York minute."

I'm about a 15 too. The fact that Sergio has a 360 Spider is the coolest thing about him. I can't stand watching him storm around the course whining and complaining all the time. My favorite commentator quote about Sergio: "he never hit a bad shot that wasn't someone else's fault."
