What happened in the soap-box derby? Those guys are pretty competitive--check out the Lotus entry:

Lotus 119

from the Sun:

Racing car firm Lotus has built the worlds fastest go-kart capable of 207mph.

The Lotus Type 119 weighs just 77lb and is constructed of the same super-strong material as Formula One cars.

The kart has no engine and is designed to race on downhill courses. It will compete for the first time tomorrow at Goodwood, Sussex.

But it is unlikely to top 65mph because the course is so twisty.

Trainee engineers spent ten months building the Type 119 at Lotuss HQ in Hethel, Norfolk.

no invitation necessary. you pay your entry of 20 and you are in.
you might be thinking of the other event there, called the revival which takes place in sep. if you want to enter a car in the festivities, you have to show them which (period) car and then arrive in costume as well. but visitors can attend that one freely as well.

unfortunately i don't have any pictures. but it was a fanatastic event again. for a car nut, its like an all day orgasm ! i would highly recommend to anybody who is thinking of visiting the uk next summer to include this in their trip. as an example: besides every new exotic you can think of i saw (and touched) the merc 300slr that stirling moss drove to vistory in the mille miglia and moss was in it !, every formula one lotus was there including andrettis '78, senna's etc; and these cars were racing up the hill, not just static display - glorious noise ! the only bad part is there were about 15,000 other people crowding in.
