Harlan,
the correct translation (and yours is very close) is

Bavarian engine factory.

Do never tell a bavarian that he is german. You may get smacked with a "stein"-mass over the head! :-O

Cool Harlan and Peter with the heads up about Audi.
I visited the BMW headquarters in Munich when I went to southern Germany a couple years ago, pretty cool place actually. I always just call it Bavarian MW cause I can never remember how to spell the Bayrischen after not talking about it for awhile, maybe this time I will.
Scott, maybe a girl that can spell isn't such a bad idea, I'll give you that at least. There are a lot of cute girls there everytime I go so I think I might have to make a habit of stopping by there, even if it is just for magazines.

Here is what I found on the history of AUDI. It was named by August Horch (horch being german for listen), when he lost a court battle attempting to keep the name in 1910 to Horch Automobilwerke GmbH (which he founded then left). He lost the battle and couldn't continue using Harch so he selected the latin for (horch/listen) which is Audi as the replacement. So here is how it worked out
horch (german)
listen (english)
audi (latin)
In the end its just the founders last name. It seems to have no relation to "auto union" which audi was later a part of.

Bayrischen Motoren Werke (german)= Bavarian Motor Works (english)

I think a more acurate english translation would "german engine factory", maybe some who knows german can tell us for sure.

Here's one for everybody. What do the four letters of AUDI represent?

Thanks for all the picture sites guys!

I've sourced Bayrischen Motoren Werke.

Trivia: True or False?

There was an East German equivalent to BMW called EMW and their logo was red/white (just like the BMW blue/white propeller)...

Bret -

One correction BMW is not Bavarian Motor Works, it's Bertlesman(sp?) named after the founding family, like so many others.

"Ralf and BMW seen in this picture testing out their new external braking system."

Seriously, at first I was mad at Ralf, but Rubens was blocking and swerving all over the place. Ralf said that Rubens braked early. Well, on a start 4 wide into the first corner, what do you expect?

See prime example, they should have a tank as their symbol. I'm sure they do have history, it's just the Europeans have cooler symbols. But I guess we did win the war so they can keep their symbols.

True. I wonder about American cars, it seems none of them have a history to cherish in their symbol. The bowtie? a blue oval? there are a whole load of odd symbols on American cars. We wont even mention the Japanese.
While walking out of Barnes and Noble (yes, Bret can read, alright I'll admit I was getting a mountain bike magazine, but at least I went to the bookstore, btw there are a lot of very cute girls at B&N, I would highly suggest that the single guys here swing by on occasion, although do we really want the types of girls that go to B&N? alright, enough rambling), while walking out I noticed that symbols on cars are gigantic nowadays. What the hell happened, when did you start needing a half foot Acura symbol on the grill? Forget the Cadillac Escalade (truck) with a symbol on the back that could be confused for a spare tire.

Indeed Joe the Bavarian Motor Works was an engine manufacturer, hence the blue and white propeller for their symbol.
Another cool one is Mercedes Benz which has the three pointed star for Land, Sea, and Air.
Obviously we all know VW's story. I wonder what the four rings of Audi are for. I know at one point they were a separate company, maybe four divisions came together to make it?

Peter,

Awesome angle! Where did you get that picture?

I guess Ralf figures the best way past a Ferrari is over the top. Did you know the BMW started out as an aircraft engine manufacture?

It was a shame for Rubino but at least MS carried the colors home in front.

I didn't see the first race. I'm assuming this is from it, damn I missed another good one. NASCAR fans could be entertained by F1 if we had a little more of this going on.
