Thanks Tyler, but that paragraph really doesn't explain much. It doesn't back up the claim of if terms of what Porsche is the most profitable, net income, net margin, gross profit, etc etc. I find it hard to believe that Porsche makes more money than Toyota.

This article explains it a bit better, Porsche apparantly has the highest net and gross margins in the car business:

"Has Porsche sold its soul? Rivals hope the public will think so. But so far the financial results show that Porsche was able to maintain its mystique while it overhauled its manufacturing methods. In the fiscal year that ended last July Porsche earnings rose 29% to $237 million on revenue of $3.88 billion. That 6.2% net margin put Porsche in a league of its own; the industry average (as tracked by Value Line) was 1.9% last year. Even classy BMW netted only 2.9% in its last fiscal year.

Porsche made some mighty profits on each of the 55,000 cars it sold last year. On the 911 Turbo, which starts at $111,000, the company makes a 45% average gross margin. On the low-end Boxster S convertible (starting at $51,600), Porsche pulls in a still-rich 23% gross margin. If Wiedeking is to be believed, a new 205mph sports car, the Carrera GT, will be profitable from its first sale next year. Price tag on that one: $350,000 to $400,000.

The Cayenne SUV is a metaphor for the company's transformation. It will be assembled in a Porsche factory being built in Leipzig, in the former East Germany. But only 12% of its content, chiefly the V8 engine, will come from Porsche. The bodies, prepainted and preassembled, will arrive from a Slovakian Volkswagen factory after a 22-hour train ride. Indeed, Porsche and Volkswagen cooperated on developing SUVs. VW's new Touareg SUV has the same chassis as the Cayenne, though of course they will look quite different. "

Heres an excerpt I found on the internet.

Porsche has become an undisputed member of the world's elite companies. The figures for the past fiscal year expressly emphasize this fact: The company was able to raise its yield on turnover before tax to 13.3 percent - due to different national tax rates this is the decisive yardstick for international comparison within a single business area. With this figure Porsche even outperformed the experts' and stock market analysts' most darting forecasts. Furthermore, the true nature of this achievement is only evident when we take into account the development work devoted to our future third model line, which reached its absolute peak; this expenditure - as it is customary at Porsche - was entered in the accounts in the year it was incurred and therefore has the effect of reducing profits. Despite this, Porsche not only maintained its leading position as the world's most profitable automobile manufacturer but was even able to improve on it.

Porsche being the most profitable Car company in the world. I read the LARGE article about a month ago in the LA Times business section. I dont remember exactly how they came up with that stat. I just remember reading that Porsche was the leader by far, and other auto manufacturers are trying to learn what they are doing to be so successful. If I find the artical I will let you know. Pretty interesting though.

I would guess that an LM can be bought for less. I would'nt think that there are too many buyers lining up for them. 70 is too high in my opinion, but if one could be bought for 45-50K, that's a different story.

Does anyone on this board intend to buy a Cayenne?

"Porsche is the most profitable car manufacturer IN THE WORLD. "

Please clarify what you mean by this, because I dont think Porsche comes close to the $4.7 BILLION Toyota made in income (not sales) last year.

Yes, their marketing department is the best in the world. A summary of above is "overpriced". The quality is not what you think. Quality cost...

This is what happens when investors start telling engineers and designers what to do. Happens all the time in the media. Porsche's only saving grace will be if they race it in the Dakar Rally and win. If they attement to put this goofy thing in the World Rally Championship, it will be feeding time for the pirahnas, and it will be eatin alive by the likes of the Subies, EVO's, Pug's and Focus WRC cars. But hey guys Shhhhhhhhh let the dorks do it, we will have more to laugh at. Let us hope this this lack of oxygen to the brain doesn't filter over and effect the folks at Ferrari.

Peter, I love the Lamborghini LM002! A Hummer that will go over a 100mph. I saw one on the road in FL years ago. They look great in pictures, but in person they look and sound wonderful.

This company is famous for building sports cars which are fantastic driving machines. Their most famous model, the 911 has a layout which challenges the driver.....indeed, it used to be scary and rewards only the most accomplished drivers.

And NOW THIS......an SUV!!! This is BULLSH*T! They've built a car for people who like Toyota Landcruisers!

The Cayenne will be bought by affluent housewives in Californian suburbs to take the kids to school.

Imagine... from now on, when my friend takes his 968 Club Sport to a Porsche Club meeting, a load of Cayennes will be there too, driven by boring housewives who think that performance driving means pressing 'sport' on the auto transmission........
I don't care whether you have a 450bhp Turbo or not. The car looks terrible - its going to be a huge success but in my opinion this is TERRIBLE for Porsche......

P.S. I have NOTHING against housewives - in fact I think being a houswife is not valued and respected ENOUGH. So don't bite my head off - I'm speaking figuratively.

Yeah I too understand how people can love 911s, I respect them a lot. Even if this is a financial success, as far as for what Porsche stands for I feel it is a loss.

I'm not a huge Porsche fan, but I understand the appeal of 911's.....However, I can't believe a bunch of people sat round a table and approved this design.....I thought they had focus groups who gauge designs.....who did they invite, Mr Magoo. I've seen some pre-release photos of the VW....it's far, far more attractive....

I think that the company could have entered this market, used the porsche franchise, but not diluted the marque. A new line, sold by its dealers (and possibly others), emphasizing the use of porsche engine, drivetrain, etc. without branding it a "porsche." But now that the comapny has started down this path, may be the'll stick the engine from a Lambo in a truck, and call it an SUV too.

I think the cheapest Cayenne will cost almost $20K more than an Audi allroad. So I think they are not direct competitors. The Cayenne would be up against the new Range Rover, BMW X5, and the M-B ML55.

Bet it will be good. They tested this thing in the artic (last road to civilization), the desert, the outback, rivers lakes, ect, ect.
Load of experience from 959 and Parker-Davis rallys. I bet we will still see 2003 models driving around 30 years from now. Looks kinda like a station wagon though, the suspension is height adjustable..

Why did Porsche do this? I see this cutting in on Audi's all-road quattro turbo wagon sales. I guess they figured that since they can't beat us (Ferrari!), they should just go and beat themselves. I'll stick with my tried and true Jeep. Anyone know the scheduled launch date of the Porsche MINIVAN??!!?!

Looks better than I expected. Starting price from $60K. They will have the basic Cayenne, Cayenne S, then Cayenne Turbo.

Porsche could legitimately do it because of their AWD and rally experiences.

Man, I hope Ferrari never try to pull something like this.
