Dave,

No need to thank me, I wish I were wrong! I really want to go watch this thing! Perhaps I can persuade my neighbor (360 Challenge) to get me an invite.

Dave,

Sorry I missed TWS last weekend, sounds like it was very cool.

The PCA events are generally open to the public. On the TWS schedule, however, it says that the Ferrari events (Oct. and Dec.) are not open to the public.

This past weekend's event, sponsored by bith FCA & PCA, was open to anyone who wanted to watch. No cost--they just had to sign the usual Ambulance Chaser waiver. We probably had 100 cars Saturday--Ferraris, Porsches, Vettes & Z06's, Cobra replicas, RX7's, Mitsu 3000's, a C43 AMG Benz, BMW's, etc.

Dave,

I would love come to watch you guys run at TWS (I'm out there frequently with PCA). I seem to recall that the events are not open to the public. Is this generally true?

I will look into it. I know several people who are members at MSR. Also, the local Dallas area FCA chapter that Rob Lay runs was looking into a track day/days at MSR for early fall (I think), so maybe if that comes off, you could trailer down from KS.

By the way, the 1st weekend in October, Ferrari of Houston & Dallas is hosting a Track Weekend at TWS (as well as the 1st weekend in December). I've done these with them before, and they are VERY fun. Not a lot of overwhelming structure--just lots of track time. Maybe that would work too?

Dave, lets set up a date, prefer the "ranch' this fall, Dana (my wife) can bring her Dino and show us how it should be done!

I will bring some shifter Karts to, that is a great Kart track, can you find out what we need to do to rent the track?

thanks, Chris

Hey Chris, when are you coming down to run at either Texas World Speedway (College Station) or Motorsport Ranch (Ft. Worth)? I would love to meet you there with my 550. Finally got my tire pressures right & had a GREAT day Sat. on the 2.9 mile course at TWS with the FCA & PCA (our first annual Hotter Than Hell DE together), but it was cancelled Sunday after hours of rain of Biblical proportions.

So, please let me know if you're coming this way.

Tim, I did not have to do a "California Chicane" as I did at Cal Speedway!

I left you a message at work, I moved our date at Buttonwillow to Tuesday August 20th. Our friends at General Motors bumped our other date. I hope this new date works for you.

Steve, no did not run on an oval on sunday! (thank god!)

Chris, I have to ask you, Did you also run Sunday's event?
(you know.. the one where you don't have to turn the steering wheel) :-)
Just curious.

Cool Chris... you always have all the fun. did you find the fast way through any of the corners? probably only until you get new brakes.

Rob, yes sorry the track was configured on the 2.5, not the 2.2.

We should have been below 2:00, but brakes were just not there, and tires concerns required we play it safe.

I am sure a lot of cars can run this track significantly quicker than the F40, this track just does not allow this car to stretch its legs.

I did enjoy the track though...........

Which course were you on? You sure it wasn't the 2.5. I finished my second school and had my first race at HP on the 2.2 last July. I was in my 100 HP RX7 and was doing 1:57's. I do have racing suspension and DOT legal race tires, but the engine is stock. Cars like the Z06 and Viper do under 1:45 on the 2.2.

Here's in-car video of a 100 HP car similar to mine doing a lap of HP on the 2.2 ...

Here's in-car video of the longer 2.5 Grand Prix course...

Heartland Park is a nice race course. They've even thought about moving SCCA Nationals here from Mid-Ohio. Pavement is great, plenty of pit area, and several configs to choose from.

BTW, I just raced Texas Motor Speedway for the first time. We did the roval, but a little different config than the American Le Mans cars. We stayed on the apron at the high banked ovals and had tire chicanes in NASCAR turns four and one. Many cars ended up with damage this weekend. Not a scratch on mine, I've already met my yearly damage quota for this year.

Chris,

Good info, thanks. 135 is a little pokey. That's why I like the main Firebird course in Phoenix.. the quarter mile straight is good for ~200. That's where I make up my time vs the racecars-- pure horsepower. :-)

I should have more news for you tomorrow. Hopefully good!

Dennis, I had heard nothing but bad things about this track, so my expectations were very low.

I was pleasently surprised. While not technically challenging, you have to be careful as the runoff ares do not provide a lot of room for error.

The F40 sufferes on this track, the gearing is so tall, you never get to really take advantage of the speed capable from the F40. Maximum speed is only about 135 on the very short straight (maybe more with decent brakes!).

I did enjoy it though. It is funny you mention One Lap, I had a driver ride with me that has driven this track since the first day it opened. His wife's car is the 500E Mercedes that won One Lap in 1997 (?).

Dennis, I look forward to talking to you this week.

There's something about putting Enkei's on a Ferrari that makes me cringe harder than a Brenden Fraiser movie. :-) If going that route, I would much rather pick from Volk Racing's centerlock models.

Great times Chris. I've heard good things about that track-- did you like it? I'm looking to build a One Lap car for next year and they may go there.

Andrew,

we are currently running Speedline "Course" 18" rims, but we are looking into other options. We are running Hoozier race slicks on the track. I have a set of Hoozier street slicks to mount on another set rims when I get those.

Thanks for the pic's, I love the OZ's but I understand they are no longer available

Wow ! Impressive lap times !
Were you running on slicks ?
What wheels are you considering to replace the original ones?
BBS LM ? Enkei ? Oz ?
Here are some pics i took of F40's at Dijon this year with different wheels..

the F40 with BBS LM was running on slicks , it sounded awesome and lapped an F50 :-)

I took the F40 to Heartland Raceway in Topeka this weekend with good results.

I was there with a group of Mustang and Shelby Cobra guys and gals, they were a very nice group, and had some very fast cars.

Heartland is a 2.25 mile road course with minimal elevation changes (Kansas). A tight track, I did most of the track in 2nd gear, with only 2 occasions to shift into 3rd and only one place to briefly get into 4th.

I am still suffering from the F40's weak spot, brakes. After California Speedway I knew we had major problems with the brakes. The F40 leaves next week to go to Brembo for a complete new system ( I will updates everybody as that progesses). In the mean time I put in Castrol SRF fluid, $79 a pint!, to try and help the boiling problem. It may have helped a little, but we still bolied the fluid and I was required to brake very early, as well as, triple pump the brakes going into every corner, killing lap times.

Suspension is normally fine on a F40, but I need 18" rims for the new brakes. 18"s rub on the outside of the front fenders with Speedlines. I found this out at Cal Speedway, so I had Koni custom make some IRL/Formula 1 Coil overs for all 4 corners. I did not get those till thursday. When they came in, they came with the short extension on the top, actually reducing ride height, so I ordered the long extensions (40mm longer). These actually lifted the front 2 1/2 inches! Way too much, so off they came.

I ran with the short extensions on the track, but I was getting a lot of contact on the side walls, not a good thing.

Mnoday, I will order intermediate extensions, (20mm longer than the short) and that should cure my ride height issue.

Well, even with no brakes and concerns over the front tires and suspension, we still posted a 2.0315, giving us the fastest lap for the weekend, not bad considering a full race IMSA GT3 Porsche was lapping here last year at 1:598 with a pro driver (Roland Linder).

Anyway, just a reminder, Ferrari's are meant to be tracked!

Chris
