The check digit (9th digit) is ONLY used on US versions. On all other versions, the ninth digit is ALWAYS a zero (0). Sometimes Japanese versions have an "A" as the ninth digits, with "J" as the 8th and "P" as the 10th, resulting in "JAP". You can check the version by looking at the 8th digit: A = USA (+ Canada) B = Europe C = RHD UK D = RHD Australia J (or JAP) = Japan R = Russia S = Switzerland and Sweden T = Middle East So, only on cars with an "A" as the 8th digit (= US versions), you can calculate the check digit. On all other cars, this simply is a "0" (zero). |

Has anyone figured out yet how to de-code the VIN #'s on a Euro version Ferrari? I have already seen the ferrariclub.com VIN # info., as well as similar info. on other sites (the best by far being at www.red-headed.com/vin.html), however they do not explain how to verify a Euro VIN #. The red-headed VIN info. includes a great Excel speadsheet tool for typing in a VIN # to determine if it is a valid # (based on a mathematical calculation of what should be in position #9), but it doesn't work for Euro numbers (neither does Carfax, as others have already found out). I am assisting a client in the purchase of a Euro 2001 360 Spider F-1 and would like to be able to verify the VIN. Based on a comparison of others, it LOOKS legit, but, hey, it would be nice to be able to verify it. Thanks. |
