Back in high school about 12 years ago, I was with a buddy at a gas station. In pulls a Ferrari, I forget what kind but it was a vintage, I believe a 330. An older gent gets out of the car and proceeds to fuel it up. My buddy looks over and says, "nice car! How much is something like that worth?" The guy looks up and smirks, "More than you'll ever afford". We were absolutely stunned speechless. Ferrari snobism at its best. Glad to say, that was the only time I ever experienced that from a Ferrari owner as most owners have been pretty generous. On the flip side, I do get my fair share of the single finger salute - always from guys with mullets in pickup trucks - when driving my Ferrari. Doesn't faze me one bit. The net effect of the old snobby guy was that it made me want a Ferrari even more.

Hi Hubert, just saw this.

It was at Sears Point march 30 (don't get to the track as often as I'd like!) and yes, that sounds like the car! I was the guy behind you in the Fiero for a few laps, fun stuff! (we were running pretty equal, though you'd actually pull on me in the straights.)

Anyway, nice car, like what you've done with it :D)

Best!
Ben.

You know whats really funny, i dont remember when or why I wanted a ferrari. Now i know more about the history and cars of Ferrari than alot of people would ever care to know and i have a deep pasion for italian cars, mainly Fcars. Although i certainly dont feel that cars are everything in life, infact i beleive they are far from it, they are still a big part of mine. About 4 years ago i was into american muscle cars. I started off wanting in 89 camaro iroc, which i planned to do alot of work to to make it a track car, then i decided an 87 buick grand national would be a better car. The next thing i knew i wanted a Ferrari.

The other day a guy comes and knocks at out door. He talked to my wife and asked if this was the house with the Ferrari. She told him it was and he asked if I would be willing to take it and show it to a group of kids he works with. He wanted them to get their picture taken with it and look at the engine etc. I washed it up today and took it over and they all got a kick out of it. A lot of questions about price and how fast. I remember seeing a Ferrari when I was young and telling myself that I was going to get one someday. Hopefully one of these kids got an impression and will be a future Ferrari owner.

(reading the honda comments)

Actually, at my last track day there was a pretty nice black integra...

He had the wing removed, and all acura badges pulled from the car. One honda "H" on the trunklid. It was a 'honda integra' (that was great! I complimented him on his car.)

Oh, turns out it's one of only a few hundred real Type-R models, and he had some mods pushing ~240bhp at the WHEELS. (as well as coilover suspension with upgraded shocks, bunch of other go-fast, turn-hard mods.)

One guy who was about GO, not show.
You can tell those, because they look like ordinary hondas, with possibly a wheel upgrade, and there are no dam drums in the rear :D)

Best!
Ben.

You know, exotic owners are some of the nicest people I've ever met.

I still remenber sitting in a 308 that some nice older gent owned back when I was a teen.

You're right, it made my night, the next day, and fully ignited a lifelong passion. That night, I promised myself I too would own one of these magnificant machines, and that I would share it with others whenever possible.

I want to take a second and thank you, and the owner of that 308 so long ago, and everyone else who 'shares the love' of Ferrari.

Best!
Ben.

I live near SDSU, in a suburb called San Carlos; it's near Lake Murray, I actually live off Baltimore Dr., 1/4 block away from the lake. Where did you stay when you were here?

I have been around this board a while...I have seen a lot mmore negative comments toward the import scene here then I have ever experienced out in my Ferrari. It seems to me the true racing and fast car folks tend to look beyond the stereotypes, the posers don't.

Dave, In Mexico, it's called the Ferrari owner's pinata. When you hit it with a large metric wrench, it oozes scraps of old timing belts.

True. Most people stereotype Ferrari owners without every meeting one nor seeing how many behave in driving situations. I have seen many a Honda owner do some ridiculous things in public or when they have asked about my car. I am not saying that this is true of all owners but I am saying there are more around to make a safe assumption on. It seems like they are trying to get some form of attention but when people see a Ferrari they automatically seem threatened even if you are minding your own business. IMO flashy paint, giant wings, loud coffee can exhausts, thumping music = trying to get attention. My main point is most make assumptions on Ferrari owners without actually seeing/speaking to one.

TimN:

Being a Honda owner and enthusiast-if that exists any longer- I welcome your comments. As I myself track Honda's and find them to be awesome track cars, and very potent street cars; of course the stipulation being that you've taken the time and excercised enough forthought to do it right. And, seeing as how at this point I'm a vicarious Ferrari owner, I can only admire from a distance.

My car has no stickers, no wings, no neon lights, none of that; everything is functional and has a purpose, everything. But, I often times still find myself "justifying" my car and it's potential to people that automatically relate me to the Fast&Furious crowd; which I disdain.

My Car:

Damn, i posted here but the post is gone!
Here it is again:
I think its ironic how we think the stereotype against Ferrari owners yet some of you are very quick to stereotype someone in a honda or other jap import car. You cant always pass them off as slow. How do you know that the civiv hatchback that pulls up next to you doesnt have full coil overs and a turbo and can take your car on the street or track? How do you know that the driver didnt go to a driving school and he is a more skilled driver than you? Im just tired of seeing people think that anything with a honda emblem on it is slow and "all show no go". I'm also tired of some people passing judgement about the drivers thinking they are all reckelss idiots, when you dont actually know that.
...and you wonder

dont worry, im not changing over to the ricer camp, im just fed up with the hypocrisy and crap.

I too have heard of the Ferrari stigmata, but never witnessed it first hand...
All the people it affects wear dark sunglasses and ooze 50 weight oil from wounds in their hands.

ijv, when the conversation goes that way, i usually say something like ' well, when you get yours give me a call, i'd love to see it'...and then i get in my car, rev the engine, and take off. after all, i am the one in the car, and they are the ones walking....

Taking about "stigma" however, I gotta say, what bothers me sometimes are the people who go a little too far expressing their opinions.
Once, I was approached by a couple of guys who asked to see my 355. Which was fine. But after 5 minuted they turned into Automobile Mag critics. They start that "If it were me, I would a done this" or " I would have never chose yellow". I usually say something after that. If that shows a "stigma", well, I'm sure if a said something negative about their car, I would receive the same response I gave them.

There are many passionate Ferrari lovers out there who see a Ferrari once a year in a parking lot. To see these cars, sit in them and have their questions answered, I'm sure fulfills their passion for the marque, the same way it fulfills our's.

my reply: "No, it belongs to my bank, who lets me drive it for a monthly fee"
ops, that reminds me, time to send them their rental fee :-)

While I agree that stereotypes have a basis, the Ferrari owner stereotype is the least accurate. Most Ferrari owners have been very nice to me, even before I had my Vipers.

Ive witnessed more lower income snobs than higher income snobs.

For the record, Im middle income but no snob. Wellmaybe a horsepower snob. :-)

Tom & Martin, I agree. I do this every chance I get. I also go out of my way to be extra-nice when people ask me about the car at gas stations, etc., although I constantly get the "how much did it cost?"/"how much is it worth?" nonsense...which I answer with a smile & a Gallic shrug...

Where that notion comes from I do not know, but it is definately there. But, it only takes a couple of club events to see that Ferrari owners want to share their good fortune and passion for Ferrari with anyone who respectfully shares that interest.

I have also let many sit in my car. Additionally, I have let any family member/friend drive it if they wanted. Everyone always leaves the car with a huge smile and they can't believe how easy it is to drive.

I know a person who lets his wife vintage race his orig. GTO(not the 80's version) and AC Corba(orig big block racecar). I think he is going for husband of the year or somthing.

with you on that. I do that all the time. The least thing most of them expect. The smile is well worth it and it does not "hurt" the car.

imprint a goal on somebody else and we will always have a strong resale market :-)

I think we all agree that many people feel f-car owners are snobs etc etc. I am sure there are a few out there (not here of course). Because of this stigma I try to be very helpful when people ask about my car at shows etc. Last night I went to a local cruise night, mostly 60-70s muscle, and when a few youngsters showed an interest I asked them if they wanted to sit in the drivers seat - it made their night and their parents thought it was great.
