Still trying to get it registered all day today. I passed the emissions test that I failed yesterday and failed the part that I passed yesterday, go figure. so... registering it out of the county to avoid the emissions thing.

Driving Impressions:
took it easy through the neighborhood letting it warm up, onto the freeway, no problem getting up to freeway speed down the on ramp, looked down and was doing 100 as I merged, slowed down and crused for a couple miles to let it warm up better. little open streched, down shift to 3rd, smooth throttle and it really goes, grab 4th and she keeps going, grab 5th and its an easy 140 then realize its an easy 140 and big ticket. people move out of your way in the fast lane which is kinda bad because it begs you to hit it again, exit the freeway onto surface streets, at about 3000 rpm's I stab it and the entire car lifts about 3" and lunges violently, back end acts like a snake but well behaved, grag second with turbo's still spooled and the same feeling again.

the acceleration is incredible, if your not holding on you can loose your grip on the wheel and shifter very easily. its hard to describe just how violent the car lunges and then just keeps going.

try a standing start, without dumping the clutch...not much there until you hit 2500-3000 rpm's and then she lights, back end comes loose and your gone, grab second because it comes up real quick. incredible !!

my Viper has tons of low end torque, pulls good from the start to the end. I can see the Viper getting a car length ahead of me but as soon as I hit 3000rpm's the Viper would be dust.

corners incredibly well but you have to be very smooth and slow back into the throttle as the back end breaks loose easily if you dont finesse the throttle. but it has great throttle steer and the back end tucks in quickly if you dont get stupid.

It takes two hands to shift the F40 (just kidding) but it is stiff. While down shifting double clutch heal & toe is almost a must to be smooth. I find that the car responds best with the rpms on the high side. this car is pure and simple hairy chest, brute force with a little finesse. rather difficult to shift up and down and the throttle has to be pressed incredibly hard to get it to break the vacumme on the carbs, once it breaks open your foot drops into the throttle making it very hard to be smooth if you close the throttle all the way. because it has racing brakes they squeek so loud you can hardly stand it.

so in other words, it is a pure pleasure to drive, adrenaline flowing, things happening very quickly in the cockpit and you come up on other cars way way way fast. as Mario Andretti says
"if things are under control then your going to slow"

This is way long already, sorry. I can't even find the words to describe what a blast this car is to drive. I look forward to meeting many of you in person and talking more. I will be at the FCA/LA look for my big white coach with the semi truck front end. look at my website to see what they look like www.CenturyCustomCoach.com and please stop in and say hi. I will also have a booth at the Mercato at the FCA/LA.

Martin:
pedals are OK once you get used to it, could use a little more room but its OK.

I used to be bummed that I was loosing my hair on the top, now I'm glad because if I had hair I couldn't fit. I can not quite get my finger between my head and the roof. had to try it any way with the helmet on and......it wasn't that bad. my shoulder started to get sore from the side of my helmet pressing against it. very different sensation with your head at 90 degrees trying to look through the windscreen. was thinking about cutting the top of the helmet off, same area where I have no hair, and see if that works. there's gotta be a way.

crap, so I won't fit either.
6'4'' as well.
Have you tried with the helmet on yet?
You need to lower the seat for sure.
How much room do you have towards the pedals?

dont let the little guy behind the wheel? thats me !!!

I'm 6'4" so I have to exhale before getting into the car. I also jump off the roof of the house and land straight legged so I can jam a few vetabrates which gives me about another inch of room in the car, but its worth it.

failed emissions on oxides of nitrogen yesterday by .01 15 minute driving emissions test here, just brutal. I think the guy was so afraid of it he ran it at about 2000 RPMs and I think the CATs got cool and didnt work very well. going to really heat up those cats this morning bring it back in and have them run it at 3-4K RPMs to hopefully get that .01 better that I need.

yeah I know, run the car hard to get those cats hot, bummer, but someone has to do it. driving impression and comparison to Viper coming soon.

thats a good thought Jack. I have wondered why it is just on the right as well. would look cool on both sides.

had the car picked up this morning to be delivered to the dealer. they finished it today. nail in the tire was not all the way through so tire was repairable, cool. fan problem was just a sensor and they didn't charge me for it, cool. they said everything else looks great, cool. installed Tubi in half the time they thought, only one hour instead of two, cool.

so its ready to roll. going to get a 3 day temp. tag and pick it up in the afternoon, get it emissions tested and then registered.

I should have a good driving impression for everyone on Monday. I'm so excited I need to remember to keep it cool so I don't wad it up or get a ticket. so I will post Monday night my impression as compared to my '89 TR, and my Vipers.

If I was to hazard a guess about the "F-40" insignia, it would be the thought that you will be the man in the left lane, doing all the passing. That way, the poor souls in their P Turbos won't have to rack their brains all the way home trying to remember the model name of the Ferrari that just dusted them. It will be there, right outside their drivers' windows.

Hi Nick:
talked with Terry about the local FCA and am joining.
Scottsdale Ferrari serviced my TR when they were in the airpark. I used to work across the street from them when I made $15K a year and thought any Ferrari would be just a car I admired. known Gary and Jim for about 15 years. first met them when I came around the corner in the airpark in my '64 corvette and lost it. almost totaled the car.

the car goes in to see Jim next Wednesday for a Tubi and to fix cooling fans, replace rear tire, etc. hope to have it emissioned and registered that Friday and FINALLY driving that afternoon. I owe everyone here a first driving impression essay.

Tim, have you joined the local FCA/FOC in AZ?
Great group of people and Terry does a nice job getting information out to all. Fun club, hope to see you at the meetings and on the drives we have.
Also, Jim Summers at Scottsdale Ferrari is a very good service advisor, he has been a real pleasure to work with.

Just spoke with Sean Harris and Harris Imports. he feels they did a good job on the inspection and the car is what the inspection reported. I may have been too harsh on Harris because of my dissapointment in having a nail in the tire, could have happened after leaving their shop, cooling fans not working, could have stopped working in the 1/10th of a mile it was driven after leaving their shop.

at any rate I think Harris did a good job on the inspection and I was just dissapointed in a few things that may have not been their fault. you spend $300k for a car and dont want anything to be wrong but it is an older car and is an F40. I want to again thank Sean for asking me to call him and being a gentleman and professional on the phone.

thanks for all the compliments. I have a Tubi on the way, ordered it from the Tubi sponsor on the Ferrari Chat board. Tino is awesome. he researched ans answered all my questions and even got himself setup as an AMEX merchant just so he could make the transaction easier for me. so if you need a Tubi click on the ad banner and call Tino.

another thing Harris Imports missed is the fact that the cooling fans do not work. goes in the shop next week for Tubi install, new tire because of the nail, and cooling fan repair. then off to get it registered. then.....I can finally drive it. after which I will give you my detailed impression of the driving experience -vs- my 2001 Viper GTS, '97 Viper GTS race car and my '89 Testarossa.

I will also try and get some sound and video for you as well as more pics. about two weeks from today.

thanks again for all the encouragement.

Tifosi - I will keep you updated on Harris Imports, I agree I think they want me to be happy and very glad Sean is upstanding enough to post a message and ask me to call him. already feel better about Harris. I'll let you know how it all shakes out.

Tim -- I am sorry you are not pleased with your inspection. I read Ferrari chat regularly and value everyones opinion. We work very hard here to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction. I spoke to Brian (service manager) and he said he gave you a very accurate description including photos of the paint defects. Please fell free to call me toll free at 1.888.521.0340 and let me know what other problems you may have had with the report. I did speak with Gary Simon (Scottsdale) on Thursday to make sure you were aware of everything with this car. In the end, I feel you bought a decent car at a very fair price. I am sure you will enjoy your Ferrari very much.

Rob, I would just like to compliment you on this site, some dealers would run scared from a site like this, but I think it is a great way to spread the word and enjoyment of the cars we all love. I have sold many members here Ferraris, hopefully you all are very happy. In this business you are dealing with more than just a car and the emotions on both sides run very high. Thank you all.

Sincerely,

Sean Harris

had Harris Imports in SLC do the inspection on the car. they charged way more than the dealer here said it should cost and in my opinion did a terrible job. cooling fans dont work, nail in the rear tire, no paint inspection and the opinion of the service department is way different than the service department. VERY VERY dissapointed in Harris Imports in SLC.

Pascal...I noticed from your profile that you're an Investment Banker.
Do you mind me asking if you work for Schroder Salomon Smith Barney (Citigroup), in Canary Wharf...

What made me ask is that I was a Summer Associate for Citigroup last year (in FI, Money Market Trading), and every evening I would pop down to the car park to see what treasures lurked beneath....

It was always a sea of Porsches but on one occasion I spotted a blue 456GT and then the next day, a yellow 246 Dino in a similar place....are they yours.....!! Its not such a long shot LOL!

Congratulations! I have had mine for about a year, 1990 Non-Cat Non-adjustable European car. The first time I drove an F40 was in the rain at Spa. The only changes I have made to the car are an electric fire extinguisher system, the carbon bottle in front of the passenger seat, with three outlets in the engine and two in the cockpit and a full FIA kill switch, with an external switch near the windscreen. The car came with a Tubi racing exhaust but I replaced it with an intermediate Tubi, the three wide steel pipes, to cut down a little on the noise. The first time I drove the car from London to Dijon-Prenois for a track day and got there a little bit deaf! If you track the car, you will notice that the brakes fade reasonably quickly but can be improved by adding a separate cooling channel straight to the dics.

Good one, Tim. Good thing the quadruped didn't scratch your new car (and, based on your response, maybe a good thing the dog's owner wasn't blind).

Sounds like a great car. If there's a downside, it's that a cooler car simply doesn't exist and so there's pretty much nothing car-wise to aspire to at this point. That said, it's a dilemma I'd be willing to struggle with. Congrats.

GOT IT!!!! he delivered it to the track, I drove it 1 mile to the infield, once I crossed the track to the infield I must have had 50 people following me on foot to my space. I could hardly get out of the car with so many people around it. after about 10 minutes a guy comes walking up with a large dog pulling the owner right towards my car, before I knew it the dog puts his paw up on the side of the door and drags it down the side. I was shocked. I grabbed the owner by the neck and steeped him back 15', just as I was about the squeez harder to pop his head off everyone started yelling at the guy to leave. I collected myself and calmed down. luckily no damage. I hade to finally tape off the car. some other people rubbing against it, etc. I had hoped people would have more respect for the car, I guess its just ignorance.

anyway, after the show drove it home in heavy traffic. I have never been in a car that EVERYONE is looking at. (so much for picking my nose while driving) finally got to open it up a little at the end of the trip, whoooooo, way cool. 1st gear about 2500 RPM's, punch it and the car lifts up and just lunges and doesnt stop, grab 2nd and keep flying. soooo cooool.

I am finally starting to get back to a flacid state now. I was very nervous about this purchase for many reasons, if you are lucky enough to buy one I highly reccomend it. I will try and get pictures posted here early next week.

I'm tired, time to get some sleep but first one more look at the car.

Chris check your email. will call you on Monday, I think I still have your number but can you please email it to me again. thanks.

Hi Martin:

I paid 300 bucks for mine. '92 6K miles, 15k service just done, 4 new tires, $2400. in chip upgrades and turbo tweeking. no other upgrades....yet! This was also a single onwner car. I worked the market for a couple months and Chris is exactly right on the prices. I got lucky at $300 for a '92 - should be 325 - 350 for this car. the least expensive I saw was in CA. for $285 for '90 and I did not like the history on the car, 2 pages long, courts involved, etc., not a bad history just kinda goofy.

In my opinion if you can buy a nice car for 300 plus or minus, buy it. I dont see how you can get hurt. F40 only took a minor hit in this soft economy while most others took a more significant drop. 1-2 years ago Ferrari prices were insane. I think F40 (and many others) are going to go up after the economy recovers in a year or two becasue of PNTS (pentup no toy syndrome)all Ferrari's will go up. I bought mine because I have always loved the car and dont believe I can get hurt (financially) with it today.

I almost bought one when they were on their way down in price around 1994-5, had a line on a car for 250 but I chickened out, should have bought it. if your looking for one, good luck and happy hunting.

interesting. Your car has some great extras. I saw some F40s for well below $300K that is why I was asking. If you want to e-mail me instead of putting it out here, that would be great. Just for my info. Want to keep the market in mind.

Martin let's just say you better have over $300K in checking. Some very low mileage cars may top $325 to $350. I think that the spread between cars with 10k and 1K is getting smaller as maintenace issues on ulta low mileage cars is off setting the low mileage. I have "heard of cars selling over $400K recently, but that is rumor, not documented. Tim may have a different opinion (which is probably more correct than mine) Chris

Tim, I don't know where we are going to be parking yet. I have a man that drives the rig for me, I am not much of a truck driver and this rig is 68' long! My friend Steve Patterson and my wife Dana are coming out with me. Dana is bringing her Dino. Steve may bring his 275GTB. I have to contact FCA and see what arrangements they have made for trailer parking, I will let you know, email me at [email protected] and I will give my phone numbers, thanks Chris

Tim. go with the Tubi comp exhaust not the sport. I have three exhuasts for my F40, stock, Tubi sport and Tubi comp. The comp is incredable. Your coach is going to put my humble rig to shame! But please bring it! go to ferrariclubofamerica.org and you can sign up for FCA/LA in May, (22-26) you will have a great time. I sponser a driver who is racing in the Formula Dodge Series and is a lead instructor with Skip Barber Racing. I brought him to FCA in Dallas last tear and loaned him out to anyone that wanted personal instruction. I will see if he can come to LA, he is currently in the points lead and just won at Laguna Seca last weekend, if he can make it I will fly him in. Chris

Hey Chris:
yes do need emissions in AZ.

Whats FCA in May in LA? where can I find info on it? web site? If its a Ferrari gathering and/or track event I will definately try to make it there. I would love to bring my motorhome, I build them, check out my website at www.CenturyCustomCoach.com - they are great for pulling big trailers full of Ferrari's.

Pictures? don't have the car yet. inspection just got completed a few minutes ago and everything looks good so I will be closing the deal today hopefully then have the car on a truck Thursday and maybe to my house by this weekend or early next week. I'm dying to see it let alone drive it. have not been sleeping well thinking about it so much. when I get it I will upload some pics. what do you want? tons of exterior all angles, interior, eng. compartment, etc. or just a couple? maybe just a picture of the HUGE smile on my face once I get it will sum it all up. thanks for all the input and I look forward to meeting some of you one of these days.

I also go to track events around the country with my Viper. going to Mid-Ohio end of April for a big race day.

Where are you located Chris?

thanks,
Tim

Do you need to do an emmision test in AZ? We don't in Kansas A full Tubi Comp system , straight pipes and baffles instead of cats is $5,700.00 or so installed. You will need to adjust the waste gate after you change exhaust. Call Chris Hill at 1 913 402 1710 on info on exhaust and waste gate recalibration. I have cats on mine, so if you keep cats $4,000.00.

I do get to Scottsdale every year for a Board of Directors meeting, I will defintly look you up. Are going to FCA LA in May?

Thanks for the welcome guys. I live in Scottsdale Arizona, lots of sunny driving days, but probably too much sun in the summer for the F40 - too hot for the car I'm sure.

I'm also remodeling a house I bought and added a 3200 square foot garage, already too small, adding on once the inspector is gone in about 2 months.

Chris loved the pictures of your garage, way cool, and got some good ideas from the rest of that garage thread as well.

Chris - I know the car has chips, $2400. worth but dont think it has a tubi. I'm buying the car from the original owner and should have the inspection report from the dealer tomorrow with all the details. 6000k miles, just had 15K service done last month and new tires because the originals were hard.

how much is a tubi exhaust? is the dealer the best place to have it installed?

thanks for all the help.

Tim
PS - anyone interested in a boat? 2001 32' Sleekcraft, twin 550hp 502's with 24 hours total. if so email me. dont know if I'm allowed to post that, if not, sorry.

Many congrats on the F40! Hope you enjoy the hell out of it! May I suggest a Tubi Competition exhaust as your first mod? Not a sweeter sound in the world. Good luck!

Hi Everyone ! I am just finishing up the details for the purchase of my first F40. I used to have an '89 TR. great car. I also have an '02 Viper GTS and a non-street legal, track car only '97 Viper GTS, and a 550 HP sandrail. I loved my TR and missed it when I sold it and cant wait to get my F40 !! look forward to the use of this board and learning lots from you guys.

whats a good place to get a indoor dust cover for the F40? with a Ferrari logo would be nice.

thanks, Tim
