Yes, I followed this thread at the SCCA Pro Racing message board. There were 60+ messages posted by the drivers we watch on Speedvision and the wrenches that work on those pro cars. I think everyone agreed with the comment Jon made, other good theories were 1) Check the map of the course, there are 5-6 hard braking zones right before that turn. Major brake fade. When I get it in the race car, a lap of braking a little easier usually gets them back, of course after your brakes cool, you usually have a cracked or warped rotor. 2) Driver made mistake of hitting gas instead of brake. http://bbs.sccaproracing.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001609.html |

That was a great video! It wasn't the brakes. Too much corner speed. Gotta brake that fat piggy earlier. He whizzed by those braking markers far too fast and turned in too early. I agree that the instructor should have been screaming BRAKE!!! At Summit Point at the last FATT they had someone there selling pictures of you on the track and they had some pictures of a viper hitting a tire wall really fast and flipping end over end. I wish I had copies of those. |

This video has been on the net for a few months now. It is clear that the driver was carrying too much speed into the corner. What is even worse in this instance is that the instructor does not take control of the situation quick enough. I am not sure who is more inexperienced, the student or the instructor. Long before the driver gets into a terminal situation, the instructor should be recognizing driver error and also recognizing that the driver is already behind on the correction phase. Just my two cents worth, but if I was that instructor I would be a bit more verbal. Regards, Jon Kofod |

The flat out performance of the Viper--in a staight line and around a track--will exceed that of many cars. But be sure to upgrade a Viper's brakes though, or suffer this fate: http://www.enkahoi.com/vipercrash.mpeg (this video might be disturbing for those who have experienced a car accident) both men do not appear to be injured. What happened here? Does it look like brakes failed or driver error? |
