Here are what owners have said about the various max performance tires from the tire rack web site. Jerry.

Stay away from S02 Pole Position Tires - those tires are horrible for the street and the track. Only go w/S02's if they are in an OEM form.

AVS Sports - I have driven on these in a few cars, including mine right now. My opinion: I can't stand them. In the rain, they are great, but in the dry, they talk too much and don't want to stick. Treadwear rating of 220, so on the track, they don't do much for you at all.

AVS Intermediates - an older tire, but half the price of AVS Sports. Weaker sidewall, but better rubber that sticks!

Haven't seen Goodyear GSC's in quite a while. I remember running the GSCS's in autox years ago. They were actually lighter than the A008RSII's but that's a different story.

If you are seriously going to put some miles on the track, I'd suggest something sticker, perhaps a Toyo RA1 tire (I have some of these at my place now, awaiting to be mounted for my next track event in May). You could even go with Yoko A032R's. R-compounds aren't ideal for the street, but since the car isn't exactly a daily driver, you can get away with it, so long as the car doesn't see rain. However, with R-compound tires, the milage will be very minimal (maybe 4-6K miles), but even more so, the heat-cycles themselves will be greater and will reduce the stickyness and life of the tires.

Remember you get what you pay for, most of the time.

That's my take.

BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW's are also a great all around tire for 50-50 driving. I have changed my 348's tires to the KD version of the above and am in love with them. They have a much stiffer side wall so your ride is rougher but you can pull more g's around a turn with them. I can feel it in just daily driving so I am sure if and when I can get it on the track I will really notice the difference. Check them out on www.tirerack.com almost every tire there has reviews and hard core testing done to them on the track. The staff is also very knowledgable.

Also, go 225 and 245, instead of 205 and 225.

AVS sports are awesome and inexpensive ($200).

If most of the use is on the track, I would go for a DOT legal race tire. Just don't drive it in the rain. These include Kuhmo V700's and Hoosiers. The Toyo RA1's are cheap and very good and there's a Bridgestone tire that's a cross between these barely legal DOT tires and something like a AVS Sport. AVS Sport has a tread rating of 180, A Kuhmo V700 is around 50. AVS Sports will last 7-10k miles with track use. V700 will last about 4-8 trips to the track at most.

S03's are very nice. Also, Yokahama AVS Sports are delightful. I have experience with both, on both the 328 as well as my daily driver 1997 BMW M3--all good. Yokos are a little less expensive, IMO. S03's might be a teensy bit better on the track, though.

Good luck!

Have to replace my wonderful but now unavailable Goodyear GSC's. Any direct experience out there on the following: S02, S03, Pilot MXX3, Potenza RE730 or Goodyear HP Ultra? Will be my sons track car so 50-50 driving to and track time. What about possibility of plus up on the 225 rears?
