Ken, I am very familiar with the M1. I have a client who has one in his collection. They are great looking cars. |

Speaking of BMW, for those of you who know about this car, it was called the 'first exotic that you could drive in rush hour traffic' and it's even rarer than my Europa. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1812544005 |

My Dad loves his BMW but I was shocked when he told me his repair costs. It seemed like Ferrari prices. $1000 for an alternator! Granted, he didn't get it rebuilt; he just had them put in a new one. |

The only problems I have ever had with any of my BMWs, including two M5s, an M3 and a 740iL have been computer related. They were all repaired under warranty. And none of them disabled the vehicle but only illuminated that pesky "Sevice Engine Soon" light. |

BMW 5 series would be a good choice. You got room to carry and excellent performance. I'm sure they are reliable but some people have said they're a pain. |

Despite all the negative social connotations, i think the BMW is the best driver's car among these. We got a new 2001 740i Sport about a year ago fairly cheaply since it was being replaced; used ones depreciate heavily. Granted, no stick. Love the 540i with the stick. The E series Benz is a bore; love the supercharged jag, but despite its power, its not as much fun to drive as the big BMW. I wouldn't do a Lexus only because it has about as much appeal as a refrigerator. Of the other benz's i like the big coupes, but can't vouch for their reliablity. They do seem to be battleships though, particularly when compared to the current, light-weight benz offerings. |

Frank, the new M5 is a little out of my league, are you familiar with the 98-99 540 sport 6-speed? What is the reliability like on the 5-series? Problem areas with 5-series? I'd like to stay around the 40K range. |

Go with a BMW. I have a BMW M5 as my daily driver and love it. It has a manual transmission and is almost as fun to drive as my Ferrari. And "no" a manual does not hurt your ability to work in your car even in traffic. I am an attorney and am always talking on my cell and taking notes while driving to court or depos in Atlanta traffic and never have a problem. Lexus, Mercedes and the like are all automatics and have no sportines to them at all unless you get the AMG Benz and it is still an auto. Life's too short to drive an automatic ! |

Plenty of room for clubs in trunk, just pack lightly for a vacation as it will not hold our two large suitcases. (The x-type has the largest trunk of the line at this time...) |

James and JMG, thanks for the information. I love the reliability of the Lexus as well but it seems to lack the personality of the Benz and especially the Jag. I have been hearing the newer Jags have been pretty good on reliability, but I am wondering if it would be worse with the blower on the motor. I'll have to do a check and see how many golf bags the trunk can hold. I love the fit and finish of the Benz but they are not quite as inviting as the Jag. Another car that slipped my mind is the 95 E500. I'm not sure about finding a good low mileage example out there though. |

If you want reliability, you cannot go wrong with the Lexus. My mother has an LS400 and it is an amazing car. My good friend is the sales manager at the local Lexus dealership and I have driven the GS400 on numerous occasions, it is a great car. James |

I have a 99 Vanden Plas (almost went with the Super Charger but the extra 80hp would have been wasted on my wife), very reliable and watching any service related parts, will be inexpensive to service in the future. (More $$$ for the Mondial!) Trunk is very small though... Golf buddy has 99 GS400, very nice and doesn't seem to have had any issues with it. |

It is time to replace my work mule and am considering a few choices. Have any of you had/have any of these cars or any opinions on reliablility. This will be a work mule for me(25,000 miles a year) so decent reliability and comfort are key issues. I am considering the following: 98-99 M-B E420, 98-99 Jag XJR, 98-99 Lexus GS400. Thoughts? Experiences? |
