Are those pit garages really safe from underground water seapage or heavy downpour flooding? I'd hate to see my car at the bottom of a swimming pool.

"I am also curious about the wheel caster system in Griots Garage Catalog that allows you to roll your car around with one hand in any direction, perhaps allowing you to put it parallel with the end wall of a 24' garage, just a thought!"

I have these. They're called GoJaks. I put 3 cars in a 20X25ft (widthXdepth) garage. You won't be moving a car with one hand though. My garage has an almost imperceptible slope (not enough to see) and it requires a fair bit of muscle to put a 2800lb BMW back there. With practice, it takes about 20minutes to get a car out so it's not a daily solution. OTOH, it's a million times better than rolling the car on floor jacks.

BTW, you can get a set of 4 smaller ones (5000 model) from JC Whitney for about $100 less than Griots.

I saw an article on them several years ago and thought: BATCAVE!! Apparently it developed because there is such a shortage of space over there. I don't recall the exact price but it wasn't that much relative to other lifts. Of course, you have to make a big hole in the ground first. They said it lowers your insurance rates even more than keeping it in the garage because its out of sight. What really impressed me was the people who had it built into their lawns. The lawn still looked good. The edge of the grass on the lift goes to the very outer edge so there's no real break between the grass on the lift and the grass on you lawn.

Erich, I have seen pictures of these, they are cool! I saw one picture of one that looked like a wide sidewalk but was an underground garage! I guess I would worry about water but, I am sure they have that issue covered. Have you ever heard the cost? I think inside the garage hidden under the floor would be very cool! What a way to impress your friends! Chris

There is a company out of England which sells a lift designed to raise out of the ground. You raise it up, drive your car in and then lower it. The advantage is that you don't need to have a garage above it. Its weatherized and designed to have a load on top. You can even grow grass on top, so you could use it below your lawn next to the driveway.

The rule of thumb on height requirement is height of both vehicles plus 6 inches. As Doody mentions, you must consider the height UNDER the garage door when raised. It is common to replace the standard garage door rails with a high lift kit so the garage door hugs the ceiling. I bet Brad could get by with a 9' ceiling ( a Kaiser Darrin? cool!)! I have a '56 T-Bird going on my lift, if my contractor ever comes back! I am also curious about the wheel caster system in Griots Garage Catalog that allows you to roll your car around with one hand in any direction, perhaps allowing you to put it parallel with the end wall of a 24' garage, just a thought! I got a Eagle Lift for about $3200. Its a 4 post type with a wheel kit that lets me move it around the garage with the 308 on it. Super for storing and working on the cars. I have a 12'ceiling so no problem with the height. Can't beat it and it solves the storage problem.

ATHOMSON:

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM: I HAD A TWO CAR GARAGE, AND FOUR CARS (HERE). I EXTENDED THE GARAGE (ITS UNDER THE HOUSE) BACK ABOUT 12' AND NOW I HAVE A THREE CAR GARAGE. I DIDN'T HAVE ROOM FOR A LIFT, BUT THE EXTENSION WAS CHEAP (HA,HA,HA) OR AFFORDABLE.

Doody, You are right about the height consideration. I was able to raise my roll-up door by 12" when in the open position. I just installed new vertical tracks raising the roll radius. I must store the Mondial with the top down. Who actually drives one of these cars with the top up? This allowed me to place the windshield through the rafters. The door actually rolls up over the trunk and engine. It looks odd but it works.

keep in mind that the lifts solution only works if your garage is higher than what i would consider normal.

i've lived in three homes that had garages and none of them could accomodate a lift - the ceilings weren't high enough.

many homes built in the 1990s and beyond have high-ceiling garages (at least in the northeast). i don't know if this is a random occurrence or not, but it's been my experience poking around.

also take note of your garage door electric opener and how the rails are installed. in some cases you have to restructure all of this to make the lift work.

we have a two-car garage and four cars. i feel your pain.

if you can't do height, consider length to park tandem. my garage is actually a rather long. with only about a 10' extension of my garage (admittedly, not free to construct) i should be able to park 4 cars. that's my current thought plan....

good luck.

doody.

Stack them. I have a two car carage with three cars in it. The nice thing about sports cars is that they are usually short. I have my Mondial Cab on the top and an NSX under. It's a little of a pain to move the cars around but it's a lot easier than going to a friend's house or storage facility (did both). I'm getting another lift that I will put next to the one I already have so soon so I'll have a Kaiser Darrin on top with a 73 Vette under. I picked a lift from a company called Lifts Unlimited (http://www.liftsunlimited.com). Their lifts seem to be the most well built and when you have almost $100K of cars stacked, it's kinda important. There are probably a dozen companies or so that make lifts. The price delta between all of them is small. My lift cost me $3K delivered. Took about 5 hours to set up. I;ve had the lift for about 8 months now and it's the only way to go if you don't have the space. Hope this helps

I realize, of course, those who can afford a Ferrari usually have plenty of garage space to store them. But what do you recommend to someone like me whose love of cars exceeds my available garage space? Im tired of begging and barrowing from friends and family and I dont have the means to pay hundreds of dollars a month for public storage. Any innovative ideas? Please let me know.
