I paid, if I remember right, 26-5 around 3 years ago for a 77 GTB with 36k miles on it, the 30k service complete, and in need of a new muffler.
My price would also be dependent on if the car had 14's or 16's in the wheel department.
By the way bill, if the car has a crazing, or little checkering in the paint, then chances are it is the original paint. You can take a good rubbing compound to it and get it looking ok...
A new paint job for a 308 done properly, with a good amount of block sanding can cost 10 grand.
So if you can find one with the paint all done, then you will save bucks in the long run.
If the $2000 work needed to bring this car up to spec is for it's 30k service then I would be afraid to buy this car...
A 25 year old Ferrari, even one with low miles like this, that has yet to have a 30k service tells me that the car was either a garage queen, owned by someone who was cheap, skimped on the belt change then what else would they let go?
kind of person, and should be avoided...
I think you should be able to get a very very nice 308 in the 27 to low 30 range.
If the 77 your looking at needs a paint job, and a 30k service I would pay 20.
I researched for a year before I even went looking, and then it took me 6 months to find one that fit the bill for me.
While I love my 77, I whish I had held out longer to find the perfect 76 glass euro drysump that I was looking for in the first place.
Oh Well!

Too high. Mid twenties sounds more reasonable.

Doc,
I owned a 77GTB a few years back. Paid 20K for it. Had about 30K miles and needed service and "a little paint work" When I was done, I had about 26-27K in it. These cars had crappy paint from the factory and you can expect all to need some paint work unless they have been repainted. Low 30's should buy a perfect 95+ point car. Nice drivers like the one I had are worth 24-27K. There is a 79 GTB in the market letter that is platinum level with new paint, major svc. and 21K miles. Asking 31.5 for it.

Bill, here is a '77 GTB that I've been looking at. It lacks service records. It needs the 30K service, but they are willing to deduct 3K off the price. Probably more if other things are found in the inspection. I decided to pass on it and wait till I find an 84/85 GTB. Good luck in your search.

I bought a 78 gts at $19,000. Needed about $6,500 worth of work including major service, new leather seats, carpet and misc. I agree the one your looking at is over priced by at least the work that needs to be done. Good luck.

Bill, if you look, you can find plenty of 308s (early GTBs are harder to find) in the low 30's / high 20's that are in great condition. I also agree about partial paint versus repainting the entire car. For a complete repaint plus $2K in repairs, you're probably looking at $5K by the time you are done. Now you are close to $40K.

There are plenty of fine examples out there.

Sounds high given your description of the car. The mileage is reasonable, but what does the need for paint tell you about how the car was kept; also partial paintwork is less than desirable, so you may be looking at some expense there, to have it done right, at a price that, today, is probably not justified given the market value of the car. I like the carb'ed 308's and would look for a glass one if you can, with dry sump, etc.

Bill what is needed in the 2K worth of work? Specifics of what needs to be fixed/replaced? Does it have all of the books/records? I think low 30's is a bit high considering it needs paint and 2K worth of work.

I'm getting close to purchasing my first Ferrari and am considering a nice '77 GTB w approx 27k miles on it. I've had an independent eval done by a reputable Ferrari mechanic who has assessed approx'ly $2000 in needed work to bring it up to spec. It also needs some paint work. The owner wants low -30's for the car. What are your thoughts about that price for a '77 as I've described? Your opinions would be much appreciated.
