I used to let it warm up for 10 min or so because of the difficulty of shifting gears. Then I put synthetic gear oil in the tran. Now it warms up for a minute or so and it will shift easy right away. |

be careful warming in your garage - even with the door open it does not take long for fumes to knock you out or filter into an attached house. |

In "Northern" Florida, I warm up my car at least 10 minutes(It sits in my semi air conditioned garage). I would rather drive it when it's easier to shift..... |

The reason I let it warm up so long is that it also gets the trans warm. You know how stiff the shifting can be till it is warmed up. This way I don't have to wrestle the stick when changing gears. Now my other car is a start and go commuter ride. |

I drive my 348 slowly keeping it below 3000rpm until the Water Temp get to middle and the Oil Temp start moving slightly. I don't have problem at this movement getting it into second it I change gear real fast. Occationally (Still no explaination) When it at it full operating Temp in heavy traffic, I cannot engage 1st or 2nd without fighting it. Again this is occationally. |

I let my 348 warm up really good before driving it. I pull it out of the garage and let it idle outside, till the fans kick on. To kill time what I do is dust off the car, clean the windows and sometimes, clean the break dust off of the rims. This takes about 15-20 minutes. |

My garage opens up onto an alley, so by the time I maneuver the car back and forth, out of the garage, it's pretty much warmed up, as am I. |

My typical procedure is to start the car up, leave it idle in the garage, put the wood plank on the drive way so it does not bottom out, pull out the car, take the t-top off and store in behind the seats. Then drive very slowly until oil temperature gauge starts moving, then go on my way with a smile. I've never timed it, but my guess is that it idles for about 3 or 4 minutes using this method and I drive for about another 2 or 3 minutes at about 20 mph. I never drive it hard unless everything is up to normal operating temperature. |

I pour mine a glass of nice Chianti, and whisper provocative suggestions into its driver side mirror...as an attempt to turn it on. |

Fast idle (1500rpm) for 1 minute. Drive below 3000rpm for 5-10 minutes. My oil temp won't even move for, oh let's see...., maybe 15 minutes unless I give it *some* rpm prodding. |

I always let it warm up and idle for 7-10 minutes before moving it at all...NEVER had a problem with fouling plugs.

I skip 2nd gear and stay below 3000 until oil is at least 150. Water takes only 3 miles to warm up to 180, oil takes 15 miles! |

I let it idle for close to 2 minutes, then back up my hill, and drive with less than 10% throttle and less than 4000 RPMs until the oil temp moves above the 1/4 mark. I don't flog the car until the oil temp gauge is at the 1/2 way mark. |

Bruce, I will agree with you on watching the oil temp... that'll take about 7 mins before the guage starts moving. |

I will start the 308 and back it out and let it idle until I hear the air pump stop running, about 2-3 minutes. I do not push any RPMs until I see the oil temp gauge move. |

I let it idle for about 1min. My driving pattern for the first 2-3 km is gear changes in 1-3-5. Keeping my revs below 4000 rpm. Once the water temp moves up I'll start pushing the car. |

If you are using Synthetic oil in the engine and gearbox, then the best warm up is to get moving after 30 seconds or so and keep the revs below 3000 till the temp guage needle starts moving. After that keep it under 4500 till the oil temp guage needle starts moving. Sitting in the garage idleing for 5 minutes does not have much point, unless you are contemplating asphixiation ! |

I let both idel until I begin to see the oil temp gauge move. This takes about 4 min. in winter (such as we get here in Austin, Texas) and 2 in summer. Then it's short shifting until the oil temp is right into the normal range. In fact, I also do this with my '97 M3 daily driver, althought it doesn't have an oil temp gauge, so I just start driving it slowly when the water temp is halfway to the "normal" range. BMW's have such crappy instrumentation anymore! Like I give a rat's arse about a MPG gauge! Give me oil temp!!!! |

Too much idling leads to fouled plugs. I let the Lotus run about 2 min. only before driving and like everyone else, I keep the revs down until everything is up to temprature. It's better for the car to drive slowly than let it sit when cold. |

in my tr, i let it warm and idle for 5 mins, then dont force it till the oil temp needle rises...good for the engine and good for 1st to 2nd shifting |

i dont exceed 4000 rpm before the oil temp has risen about a quarter of the dial. i know this is rather imprecise, but so is the dial..... |

I usually let the car warm up for ~ 3 minutes and then keep it below 3500 - 4000 until the engine temperature is ~ 60 degrees celsius. |

This actually applies to all cars but I was wondering how many people actually sit and let their car warm up before driving them. If you do let it warm up, do you let it idle for a certain amount of time or do you use your temp. gauge. |
