If someone asks me in a polite manner and is not offensive or misleading (in other words not lying) I usually politely say "I am sorry but I have my own family to feed."

I take no joy in other people's problems but I worked my butt off to get where I am in life. I have been through very good times and very bad times (major bankruptcy/lost everything) and fallen down a few times, but each time I got back up and back to work.

One time I was very uncharateristically rude to a fellow who walked up to my car and was very pushy and obnoxious when asking for some money (imagine that you ask someone for a $5 and are rude about it to boot).

I said, "..sure I can spare a five......(pulled out a $100 bill)....YOU GOT CHANGE FOR $100?
He told me to F-off and left!

Regards,

The old gas trick and another one is the flat tire trick. And they always say they will pay you back the next day. I own a restaurant and one time I had a guy come in giving me the flat tire deal (he lost his wallet etc. etc.) He told me how he had been coming to my restaurant for years and loved the place. I had only been open for 6 months at the time. I just let him keep talking then said " so you have been coming here for years huh" to which he replied that he had. I told him that was funny considering that I had only been open six months. Then he said there must have been another pizza place here. I told him he was right there was....three years ago! He hit the road after that. Strangly enough he went out and got in a car.

I used to live in Eugene, OR-greatest number of hippies & ex-hippies per capita than any other city on earth(at least it seemed). Panhandling is an art form there. My favorite is the guy with a 1/4 gallon gas can saying he's trying to make it portland, he just needs a buck or two for gas. And you see him there week, after week, after week....

One time I told a guy and girl no, and they responded by calling me some not nice names, like that will make me want to give them money.

The worst part is that one get hit up so often, everyone starts doing it. I've been asked at arcades for money from 6 and 7 year old kids. Can't help but think they view this as acceptable because they see it on almost every block.

Rant over.

A friend of mine was out in the driveway one day waxing his brand new Ferrari. A ragged looking bag lady pushing a grocery cart full of aluminum cans wandered up to him and started begging for quarters. Same old sob story about needing money for medicine and food. My friend finally got tired of the harassment and said, "Hey Mom, get off my property or I'll call the cops!"

Yes, these people are getting pretty creative. Good thing I know my neighbors. I usually point at my "No Soliciting" sign and shut the door.

I've been in my house for a year, and we get the full range of solicitors. The best was a seedy-looking woman saying she lived just down the street, got locked out and needed $40 dollars to go pick up a prescription! A for originality. I told her I pretty much recognized everyone on the block, and had never seen her before. She pointed at a guy washing his car and said she lived next to him, even giving a bogus house number. I offered to walk down and ask the supposed neighbor if he knew her, at which point she quickly moved on. Friends of ours a few blocks away had the same woman try it to them, and a few months later, she even came back to our house with the same story! I just told her if I ever saw her again she was going to jail. Problem solved. People here ignore the "No Soliciting" signs too.

The "No Soliciting" sign doesn't work for me. They still come in to my business. I wonder if they can even read?

Best thing to do is just hang a "No Soliciting" sign by your door. That usually discourage most salesmen.

In college, our swim team would raise money by selling 50-50 raffle tickets. We only sold to close family and friends.

I am not sure what they are teaching in College any more, and I am not too far out of school myself.
It seems that this summer I have had four college students come to my door and ask for money for some trip they want to take. They do not offer to do anything or sell anything, the money they raise is just for them. One guy said he was going to Japan to play soccer for I.U., and needed to raise money for the trip. Well after asking him many questions I find out he is the manager for a Intermural soccer team. I told him to ask his parents for the money.
