I checked my oil last night, looks to be at the right level. I'll try to get a feel for the frequency of this whine today during the AutoZotica cruise (anyone else going?)...

I suspect the frequency of the F1 transmission pump depends on how many times you shift gears. I'm pretty sure I can hear the pump while driving in stop and go traffic, although the 5000 miles service has just been performed.

I'll check the oil tonight and see. I checked it when the car was new, but that's a whole 1300 miles ago :-)

Dave,
Mine does it very rarely too; but less than 25% of the time. Check your F1 oil level, I am told a low level may cause more pump operation.

Thangs guys, good deal. It's not happening every single time, but it sure seems like more than 25% of the time. I'll try to keep track of how often.

If the noise comes on EVERY time you engage first gear, its not normal - at least not on my 2000 F1. It happens every once in a while, but not every single time I downshift into first... I would say every 25% of the time.

This is the F1 transmission pump. It is normal. The pump makes sure you have enough pressure periodically and when you are about to drive the car. The computer thinks you are about to drive the car when you open the driver side door. I believe the pressure is used to change gears. I suspect this occurs whatever gear you are in, when the pressure is lower than some amount.

Heh... I think you're right, it's the same noise as when I open the door, except that I'm sitting inside :-)

So, what is it? I thought that was the fuel pump when I opened the door, but I can't see why it would decide to flip on every time I go into 1st gear...

Thanks

Its not the same noise it makes when you open the door? It could be the F1 tranny fluid pump... but thats not normal.

I've got this funny whine from the rear of the 360, I think it corresponds to putting it in 1st gear. It happens on start up, and on the downshift at a stop sign (I've got the F1 tranny). Sort of a 3-second "wheeeeee" like from an electric motor.

Is this the oil pump? Something else?

Thanks,
Dave
