To compliment Peters post,

Here are some lap times from Thunderhill race track with Steve Millen at the wheel. From the January 2001 R&T

Ferrari 360
2.7.65

550 Maranello
2.9.25

Corvette Z06 (385 hp version, not the new 405hp car)
2.8.39

As you can see, the Z06 beats the 550 and is close to the 360. The new Z06 now has 20 extra hp and sheds 35 pounds of weight.

Ken,
Its possibly a trick, my guess: his speedo rests at 15.

Rob, I may take that bet. I have a huge weight advantage over you to offset your huge horsepower advantage. (Lotus Europa; 1550 pounds) Plus, I trust my clutch to launch me!*S*

Hey, Kelly. You leave me sometimes... like when I take my foot off of the pedal. HaHa!
We cruising this weekend, or what?
Hello everybody. I am the new kid on the block who works too much and sleeps too little. I know, just what you wanted... another eloquent elucidation.
I decided to join your forum tonight because it looks like you are having fun and I thought I might want to stick my two-cents in on occasion. I am Kelly's buddy with the Euro 308 QV. I look forward to chewing the fat with y'all.

Kelly,
Maybe this guys car was running sick. You would be surpised at some of the different numbers the C5's have run. I have seen some really strong cars, and others that seem a little off. Also, his car may not have been fully broken in yet. I remember that my vette was a little sluggish until it finaaly got everything set.
Who was that guy with the 355 that was borrowed? I am pretty bad with names. One last thing, have you had a chance to run out at no problem raceway yet? I noticed your pics taken of Spiro's F50 for the ferrarilist gallery. Good touch getting your son in there.

I had a great run with a Z06 vs my 512TR at Watkins Glen last year, we were nose to tail going at it hammer & tongs for 5 laps, I'm sur ethe people in the stands enjoyed the show. After 5 laps I was able to pass him in the back straight, then of course, my brakes failed :-) Oh well it was fun while it lasted & I did get by him tho he certainly made me earn it :-)

Kelly,
Whoever this guy was I have no idea what he was doing! I met you one day last year at a car show in Slidell. At the time I was driving a 2000 Pewter Vette Hardtop. With minor exhaust and intake mods my hardtop vette was running about 360 horses. After that show we all got on the interstate and played a little. If you are who I think you are then you were int the 308, alongside someone with a 328, and then someone else with a black 355 that he had borrowed.
Anyway, when all 3 of you guys were ahead of me going at it I was right behind you all. I must say that your car ran a lot stronger than I would have thought, but regardless, I had no trouble whatsoever keeping up with you above 100mph.
It should be said that I never took the opportunity to track my car in the quarter mile before I got rid of it. As a point of reference a friend of mine with the exact setup as me in a 2000 hardtop vette was running high 12s@110 on his better runs.
I also should let you know that I had a great time seeing your cars at that show at Pep Boys, and I had an even better time high-reving it on the interstate to that glorious sound of 3 F-cars at full gallop.
Congrats on having such a great car, and when I get back into driving a sportscar we just may run into each other! Cheers

This is an interesting converstation being that I just test drove a new 405hp ZO6 tonight! Kelly either you have one hell of a 308 or the driver of the Vette either didnt know how to drive or was afraid to push it to hard. Either that or it was a ZR-1 with valet mode enabled. One good way to tell what year Vette it was you were up against is the exhaust exit location (assuming you saw it from behind when he initally passed you). If it was in the center or the rear bumper then it was a C5, split two pipes on left and right means it was an earlier model. I would by no means have trouble believeing you that your 308 with no cats and a K&N could run at highway speeds with a 1990-1996 regular vette, the 308 is amazingly quick when pulling from 50+ to 100+. Oh by the way on my first subject the ZO6 is an amazing car!!! I was going to purchase one before I got my 348 but just had to have a Ferrari instead but tonight when I took it for about 15 minutes from the dealer and romped the throttle four or five times I realized how beastish that car is! Having driven a 360 I seriously think this car would easily give it a run for its money. It sticks unreally to the road and has something none of our V-8 Ferraris have.....torque! I pulled a 20mph turn in 4 gear and she pulled happily all the way to 100. When I got back the dealer ask me if I was ready to buy it....I thought about it for a second then politely said no....my Ferrari is WAY more fun to drive even if it isnt as fast! BUT as soon as I get some money saved up I can tell you right now what the next car in may garage will be!!

I think 308s are slow off the line but this is not what they are made for. I have an 83qv and feel like once it gets up in it's power range it is pretty fast. I test drove an 82 2v car and I took it up past 100mph no problem. I was ready to buy it but we didn't get the deal done. As far as hanging with a C5, I'm not so sure. Maybe I will give it a try seeing how you did o.k Kelly.

Thanks Rob,
My car just runs good. My friend has a 83 Euro car. He says I drive off and leave him Sometimes. His cars does not run as smooth as mine. And I didnot notice it unitl he pointed it out to me.
But you can't hardly feel the car moving when you put you hand on the intake at idle.
He's going to have his Fuel pressures checked soon.
Thanks

Kelly...you won't hear me say your car is slow.......My 308 gtbi euro runs quite well...I would say very well....And I have heard the same thing from others....."The 80-82 injected cars are slow". I have rode in my buddies 78 308gtsi, mine is definetly quicker and much more responsive. Mine is stock, his has mods. Maybe his don't run as well as it should or maybe mine just runs better. I am happy with the way the injected cars run and their dependability.

I have no idea what year it was. If I see the guy again I'll ask. But I know it was new. As he pulled away from me, I down shifted to 4th, That's when he stopped leaving me behind. When I shifted into 5th I start catching up.

Who knows, he may have been jerking my chain.

I just hear so much that my car is slow(one of the reasons i got off the Ferrari LIST), so I was suprised to at least one stay with him, much less pass him by.
Now I will say this he never got more than a car length ahead.
Thanks

Those C5 vettes have 350 hp and gobs of torque. They are also quite light.

Last years Z06 has 385hp and is even lighter than a regular C5 and the new Z06's have 405hp.

My girlfriends dad has an automatic, convertible C5, and it is slow off the line. But once they are moving, can accelerate quite quickly.

Thats great Kelly...but what year vette are you talking about...if it is a C5...it must have been a sick one. No downing the Ferrari, I have a 82 308. The 80 308's top speed noted is about 140mph, 0-60 in 7.9 sec., 0-100 22.1 sec. according to R&T. The C5 is better than 170, 0-60 in less than 6 secs. And will do the 1/4 in less time than it takes our 308 to go to 100 (somewhere in the low 14's to high 13's and at better than a 100 mph). My wife is wanting to get a new convertable vette, she already has a healthy 82 vette custom. Nothing would make me happier than busting her a** side by side, but I don't see that happening even with her driving the vette. And definetly stay away from the Z06....A vette with steroids. But your story sounds great and I am going to show her it and say....Look a 308 did outrun your C5...SEE THEY ARE NOT AS FAST AS YOU THOUGHT....

This weekend I went to cruise in. It was mostly vettes. Nice event, my wife and I considered it a date to get away for a few hours from our 3 kids.

Well on the way home a new yellow vette passed us on the interstate. I was running in 5th at about 4 grand.

As he passed I could here him rev up and want to play, but I never expected I could compete.

Well when I down shifted to 4th and shifted into to 5th at seven grand I passed him.

When we got off the interstate 39 miles later we found out we did not live that far from each other.
The guy tells me to my disbelief that he had his new vette floored.
I was extremely surprised that a 1980 2v with no cats and a K&N filter could pass a new vette.

I'm impressed.

Now i've been told not to play with the Z06's but I never thought I could pass a vette, maybe a mustabng, but not a vette.

Any of you other guys been able to do this?

Thanks
Kelly
