David is right on. Make sure to have the engine warm, so the oil is a little heated up and flows better. I use MObil One red cap (15/50) I believe. It will take about 10 bottles, depending how well you drain. At Walmart you get the best deal on Mobil One. A case for $ 25.00, you will need two. Although not as easy as on a regular car, once you figured out the front engine drain plug you are on your way to self help Ferrari-heaven! Have fun. BTW you will definetely need a lift. I can not see anybody crawling under the car while on some flimsy stands. Car has to be level as well to drain fully.

Changing the oil is rather easy, although you'll need a lift or at least a good set of ramps. You need to remove the airbox on top to get the oil filter. You have 2 drain plugs, one under where you fill and top off and the other towards the front of the engine. For the front of the engine, you'll need to remove a small metal shield. You will also need 2 new washers for the drain plugs. 10 quarts of Castrol Heavy Duty 15w40 is usually what I use. Hope this helps a little. I know it's a little vague, but I haven't done it in a while. Actually I'm about due. The nice thing of living in the DC area is that you can arrange with FoW to use their lifts on Saturdays to do maintenance things, such as changing your oil, for nothing. And usually the tech on duty will help you with everything. |

A local Ferrari mechanic told me that they use Mobil 1 5W40. My 348 is ready for its first oil change also. I think you'll need about 10 qts (not 100% sure). |

Bob P--I think the 328 & 348 are both beautiful cars, however I wanted a more modern look and couldn't afford the F355. I have heard that alot of the early 348's were plagued with problems, however if the car has all updates current (nippendenso alternator, Bosch 2.7 ignition, etc.) they are actually a very dependable car. Everyone--thanks for the help. |

I use 20W-50 Castrol GTX. The Synthetics are great as well however for some reason my 348s engine loves the natural dino juice. I have never had a problem with any castrol product, they have all been wonderful in my car. Its funny that everyone on here loves AGIP so much from what I understand its not that great of an oil at all. Themo breakdown is suppose to occur at much lower temps. |

FYI, the 348 came from the factory with AGIP synthetic oil. |

search the archives , BTW I don't think people consider 348 older gen - they use that more with 308s and maybe 328. full synthetic should be fine |

I'm told Talacrest - Europe leading independant F dealer use Castrol Magnatec, so I guess thats whats currently in my 348. Isn't there some opinion against using 'fully' synthetic in older design engines? or is the 348 lump not considered an old design? Robert, I agree with your views on the 348 interior wrt 328. Certain things on the exterior of the 328 I prefer but overall the 348. Early 348's are supposedly prone to some probs, mainly electrics related (see other threads), having said that mine is reasonably early being a '91 but I haven't suffered YET! I think the 348 still looks very modern for the money, whereas the 328 is a more classic shape IMO. |

Chris, Your car looks great. How did you choose it over a 328, etc. I've looked at several 328's but really like the interior of the 348 better. I keep reading an undercurrent of opinion on the 348 that it has had teething problems. Did anyone warn you against or for it over the 328? Thanks, Bob P |

My 348 is getting close to it's first oil change since I purchased it and I had a couple of questions. What kind of oil are you guys running in your cars (petroleum based or synthetic) and what brand name for either. Why? What all is involved in changing the oil on a 348 (step by step). I realize it is a dry sump engine, however aside from the remote resevoir shouldn't it be a relativelly easy to do. The reason I ask is the only shop here locally that deals with Ferrari wants almost $200 for a basic oil change. While I will have all other services and repairs done by a factory authorized service center, I refuse to pay that much for a simple oil change and am going to do it myself. Thanks in advance for your help |
