sounds like anybody who feels compelled to put a front plate on should at least bend it somehow to stymie the revenue generating efforts.....we already paid enough tax to ride in these cars.....

actually bill is correct

the police use the front plate, because it is flat and easy scannable for their radar and laser and to zap it coming their way

The front plate is an excellent target for speed enforcement laser and radar.

I already made a comment about this on another thread, but I'll restate what I found out. A few years back I got pulled over by a cop for no plate on the front of the car, luck for me it was an old class mate from high school, so no ticket. I went and got new ones at the Department of Motor Vehicles. I asked them what the purpose of the 2nd plate was, and was told, it was for just in case the rear plate was stolen or lost, you could use the front plate on the back of the car until you got new plates. This is so stupid. If you are going to have to get new plates any way, what is the difference. I was told by my old classmate (the cop) that the city wanted the police department to crack down on cars with no front license plate, because of all the new photo enforced stop lights. The cameras take a picture of the front of the car, and if there is no plate they can't send you a ticket, cause they can't get the info off of the license plate number. This just another ploy for the city to use as an easy way to generate more revinue.

Chris, in response to an attempt at challenging the statutes regarding front plates: Why should the state be allowed to mandate the attachment of an appurtenance that causes a reduction in fuel economy. Is not the Modena designed as an extremely aerodynamic vehicle ?? Why should a state require a driver to do something that will lower gas mileage, even if it is a minimal amount, whilst they will fail a vehicle in an emmisions test that slightly exceeds the test limits.

My friend got one no front plate ticket on his camaro from the NYPD, this is out of taking the car there every day for classes for 2 years. Alot of times they will pull you over for speeding and give you a no front plate ticket instead.

Just yesterday I was pulled over in the Ferrari for the first time, and it was for not having a front plate. The officer was really cool about it. He basically pulled me over to check out the car. When I handed him my paper work he refused to take it and just told me that I needed a front plate. He then complimented my car about 10 times and went on his way. My wife and I just smiled at each other and drove off. As to the front plate, I must have lost it so the car will not be on the car anytime soon.

Solly, I just picked up my car from the service dept at Ferrari Of Long Island and they had a 360 spider and were working on mounting a bracket for the front plate. The Bracket was installed just underneath the front spoiler and it did not look that bad and no holes. Did you have to drill holes in your bumper?

I am going to have to do it within the next two weeks. Just tired of getting pulled over and questioned all the tims.

See you in the hamptons next weekend.

I got stopped for speeding...serious speeding very early one morning outside of Geneva, NY. The cop was so enamoured with the car (365BB) that he just couldn't "give" me a ticket for 61mph over the posted speed limit, but had to give me a ticket for "something." Fortunately, there was no front plate...and hence a $25 ticket for a non-moving violation. Never been a front plate of the BB...though required in NY.

Eli- I have been stopped numerous times for lack of a front plate on a NY car, and never gotten a ticket. I finally decided to end the hassle. Ferrari makes a front plate bracket for the 360 which does not hang down below the front bumper, and actually looks decent. On the Dino I literally bent the front plate in half backward to avoid scraping the ground on every bump.

I too am partial to Steve's "backorder from Italy" line, however being a cop myself I probably shouldn't go that route. Front & back plates are required where I live, although they make an exception in the statute for "classic cars" and "street rods" which can both get away with running only the back plate. The problem is that both are based on the year of the vehicle with a minimum age requirement of 20+ years old.
Has anyone ever heared of any way to successfully challenge the statute in court or get an exemption? Maybe based on the depreciation associated with the mounting of the front plate bracket (i.e., holes drilled in either the grill or front bumper) or the rareness of the car?

Got a speeding ticket 2 yrs ago and when the cop questioned "why no front plate" I answered "would you drill 2 holes into this piece of sculpture?",he looked at me said "I guess not" and didn't add another ticket. In 2 yrs never been stopped just for front plate absence.I think it just depends on how jealous the cop is and whether he has a hard-on for Ferraris.

I got a "fix-it" ticket for lack of front license plate in San Jose 6 months ago. I had just received my plates the day before and told the officer I was waiting for a mounting bracket. I thought this would work given the very recent registration but that did not. I got the option to either fix it and pay $10 or pay $80. I paid $80.

Next time this happens to me, I will tell the officer that this low volume car has been approved by the feds without a front license plate and that I don't understand why I need to have one.

I suspect it won't work although I remember someone on this board mentioning this a few months ago.

Like Marq I also live in the dc metro area. So far no problem. But I was told to keep the tag in the car. I happen to like the back order from italy line.

Another benefit of the front license is that radar/laser guns need a nice flat area to get a good signal reflection. The front plate makes a good target.

One more reason my license plate stays in the trunk....Norm

Every time i've been stopped for exceeding the speed limit, i get questioned about the lack of a front tag, and use Steve's line about how its backordered from Italy, etc. Usually makes the officer smile, and has never resulted in a citation, but it also hasn't prevented them from writing me up for speed. I only got stopped once for the lack of a front plate, by a cop in our town; once he verified that i was a citizen of our fair village, and that he knew me from my involvement in the town, he waved me on; when i asked him why he stopped me, he admitted that it was a good pretext to stop exotics, and implied that it might enable him to nab a car thief, drug user, etc. Boy these guys have a depressing job...

DC-MD-VA not that strict. I've been driving sports cars here without front tags for over 20 years. As long as you have the 2nd tag in the car with you (I keep it in the trunk), they're usually fine with it. They just don't want someone else driving around on the other tag. I can't believe they hassle you over that. You've got to be kidding.

Ask the parts manager at your dealer to give you a receipt for a front license plate bracket, then have him stamp it "ON BACKORDER FROM ITALY". Keep it in the car with you and if you get stopped show it to the officer and apologise saying how disgusted you are that the part hasn't arrived yet.

ELI,
that is a shame. I got a ticket in LA with the Spider which I drove on the old CA tags and he had also just the rear not the front. I fought it and told them I had dealer plates from FL on the rear of the seat because we could not get the plate of. Did work got the dismissal yesterday.

If you live there though...gotta have it. Shame though

I have been pulled over several times this month for not having front plates. What do you guys do or say to get out getting tickets? I hate putting on the front plates . It just looks horrible.
