As general rules of thumb: If you can feel anything on the paint surface (after a good wash) you need to claybar/buff the substance off. If your bare wet hand can feel it--it most likely is some kind of grit embedded inthe paint. If the paint surface (again after a good wash) does not have a low coefficient of friction, then the paint is oxidized or needs a new coating of wax/zaino. If you can't feel anything but the shine won't come or won't stay, then you need to buff the surface to get rid of the micro-cracks in the paint so the wax/zano can protect the smooth paint surface. The front of my F355 tends to eat bugs and pebbles--endning up with little divots in the paint. I have three choices: Dont' drive the car, use a bra, or get it repaired at regular intervals. I use option 3. |

Russ - The bar can be used to remove rail dust (from transporting new American cars by train), tree sap and paint overspray (like from painting your house). It does nothing for removing wax, bubbling clear coat, oxidation or auto paint. It's a nice thing to do to your show car before adding a synthetic "wax" multi-level system. But, honestly, the wash in dish soap gets off most stuff. It did remove a bunch of junk from my Benz daily driver. But, I think waxing does the same job. It sounds like the front of your car needs to be buffed with good 'ol rubbing compound (best left to a Ferrari detail pro). I have to buff my back deck lid to remove water spots when I don't dry it fast enough. Clay bar won't touch them. |

The luster on the front of my 328 does not appear as deep and sparkly as that on the rear deck and quarterpanels. Could this be because the front oxidizes faster or picks up mor grip because it takes the wind head on. If so is this something that a claybar could help. Also I am unclear on what a claybar does. For instance does it take off some paint or just foreign substances. |

I really like Zaino Bros www.zainobros.com The products are great, but expensive. The owner, Sal, requires you to mail him a check first - no visa. The clay bar seemed a waste on my Ferrari. I did not pick up a thing after the wash in Dawn. However, on my other cars, it did pick up a bunch of grime - but who cared. This is a twice a year synthetic system for daily drivers. If I had known about Griots first, I would have tried that. Dust does not stick to my black 328 with the Zaino. It's amazing. |

I've been very happy with Griot's products. I also got a random orbital for waxing, and it works awesome. |

David you are correct the clay bar is not used to remove wax - actually the instructions tell you it will not remove wax - it is more for the surface contaminets as you stated |

I have never used Dawn dishwasing soap to remove wax, but I can tell you that Griot's clay bar is not very effective at removing wax. I have clayed sections of my cars before, then given them a wash, and noticed the water beaded up like always. It MAY remove some wax, but not much. The reason for using the clay bar is to remove the surface contaminates sticking to the paint. Such as tree sap, bugs, and all that stuff that usual hand polishing and waxing will not remove. |

Glasurit is a paint material, not a brand of wax. Zymol does seem to give the deepest glossy shine you can get. You should only use it on a completely clean surface as it has no cleaners, it will not remove any surface contaminants or stains. The next best thing i've found is Mother's Carnauba cleaner wax. It is only about $9 for a big can and it waxes nearly as good as Zymol and seems to last longer. It is also removes scuffs or stains while waxing at the same time. Using the Mother's will clean the surface pretty good but if you must remove all the wax for some reason my local body shop recommends using Dawn dish soap. Cleans it off completely and much less effort than a clay bar. |

I bought some of the Zymol "Ital" wax on Ebay($43), it is very nice stuff, but don't believe the hype. Made for "Italian car paint", but most recent Ferraris use Glasurit, which is German! :-) |

Bruce, thanks for the insight. You're right $6.50 for a wax is well worth it. Yeah my wife thinks I'm nuts also so keeping it in the refrig. would fit the image. |

tom i used griots clay and worked great but for 12 or 13 dollars i save, a little dish soap works great, strips the old wax off completely, cleans the car , and doesnt strip the paint off... dave yea 65.00 does seem wacky, but its good for about 10 applications ( 6.50) a wax good..its excellent stuff, easy on easy off, 1 step, and is designed for "italian paint"..i put it in my refridge until i use it...wife thinks im crazy, but us guys have to have our toys.... bruce |

I have used the clay bar from Griot's with the speed shine. It worked great. Haven't tried the "Best of Show" wax yet. Used McGuires 3 step process also and that works great, except you have to basically wax your car 3 times(time consuming and tedious). Have seen some very positive comments on Zymol on other threads here. $65 seems wacky, but if it's that good I should bite the bullet. Anyway, have fun in the Hamptons this weekend to anyone going, I'll be away or would have loved to go. |

Great, i figured its the one car event my wife won't feel completely surrounded by a bunch of car nuts like me. Bruce - does the soap really clean the surface? - this clay bar used with speed shine really cleaned the surface. The clay bar only costs a few bucks |

Finally got around to using the griot's clay bar in preparing my car for the hamptons rally this weekend and I have to say it worked great - my paint was smooth as silk after it and the wax job never looked better. |
