I would look out for a 308 GTSi. You have to remember, owning a Ferrari is a lot about maintenance. The 400 will kill you if you are looking for a low maintenance car. But what is true for all Ferrari is also true for the 308. Buy the best one you can afford. |

I used to have an 85 400i 5-sp. A wonderful car. I wanted a V12 rather than a V8. Manual is important, automatics are too sluggish. I loved the understated design. I sold it because of the emissions problem in NY. You have to look into this, since all 400's are grey market cars. |

308 is IMHO the sexist of the two, also maintenance, parts etc are much easier. The 308GT4 should also be considered if a 2 + 2 is needed - one in black looks real cool ! |

400i especially automatics are declining again. The maintenance on this 12 cylinder is hughe. You must remove the side draft webers etc to get to the quad cams for adjustment etc. the injected models have various sensor quirks. This is why the cars are entering the very low teens. If you are good with hands and have tools the parts are not much trouble (as for the automatic transmission its all GM). The car is a sleeper but gets no oohs and aaahs. I suspect in 25-50 years, if the earth is still here, It would be a collector due to limited numbers produced and 12 cylinders.By far the 308 is the way to go. |

Jim got a point here. Ed's 308 is possibly the BEST you can buy for money today. I would buy it if I would be looking for a 308. Drop him a line. I saw pictures of the engine he put together. It does not get better than THAT!

If I were shopping in the $30k range, I'd buy Ed's 308. You KNOW it's sound mechanically, and with all his attention it may be the most reliable one out there. New interior, new paint, and I'm 6 feet tall and have trouble fitting in my 328. You'll still have V-12 maintenance costs with a 400. |

Ryan, The 400 is a great car for 4 people travelling incogneto while the 308s range from the GT4 to the QV and are hairy cars to drive really fast (I mean REALLY fast!!) as opposed to front engined cars but are just about bullet-proof and parts are readily available. I took a 400 for a spin and loved it and the practicality makes sense but I still bought a GT4 as I was gonna track the thing and 400s don't track!! 400=class with beautiful sounds and a touch of practicality 308=fun, fun, fun (after you learn to drive them properly) |

Mitch's car is a phenomenal machine. As he said two different things. Giving that you own a more race oriented sports car I would say you will not be happy with the comfortable and classy limosine 400 and be much more a 308 fan. For best of both worlds look also into a 308GT4 Dino. 2+2 and is a little tamer than the 308GTS/B |

Sounds good. I feel like I have a chance to own a 400 instead because I am already maintaining one 2 seater. A 4 seater car would definatlry help me out. Thanks for compents so far. |

Having owned a 400i GT for almost two years now I cannot imagine owning a 308. First, if you are over 6' tall the 400i will be more comfortable. Second, the V-12 sounds incredible. Third, more room, Fourth, not everybody has one - or even knows what it is. Just MHO. |

I drive my '77 400 as my daily car. It has been a pleasure with minimal problems even those were related to age rather than design. I've had no problem with parts. As for maintenance, it does not have the belt issues as it has chains...no need for frequent service. As between the two, you're trying to compare apples and oranges. If its a question of comfort and practicality th 400 scores high. |

Frank makes some good points and did not even mention the dino factor . if parts are not an issue and you like the looks of the 400 go for it - I don't think we have ever had a thread comparing these two models |

The 400i would be a better daily driver IMHO. Lots more room, better a/c and very classy. I would get the GT model which has a five speed . I had a 1977 400GT and loved it. Parts are plentiful as they are the same as on a lot of other Ferrari models as well as other european cars. They do suffer from the Ferrari 4 seater depreciation blues though. But, that should be near the bottom as you can get them in the high teens low twenties now. |

400i is tougher resale and prob has harder parts to find - plus maintiance on 4 extra cylinders - 308 is prob better for you |

If your going to go Ferrari, you have to get the 308... YOu can do alot of the maintainance yourself and it looks like a Ferrari.. The v12 on the 400 can be alittle more expensive and they usually come in automatic... Good luck with your search.. |

Which car would be easier to maintain? I have a 1994 RX7 and want to have a daily commuter. So far my 7 has been modded to the extent that it isn't too street worthy. I love Ferrari's and would like to have a nice used one for under 30K.
