Drove the Mondial today for about 250 miles. The engine is running very cool, you can put your hand on it when the engine is "hot" (and it does not burn). From 0 to 60/80 faster than the TR, above that the TR is defintively faster. The strip where the TR did 162 the Mondial did 153, possible top speed is around 165 in my opinion as this would be 7,900 rpm.

Christiank:

Thanks for the K&N filter tip. I will put one in my TR.

I think I understand what you mean about nice looking engines. Nice is good but you are into pure performance (where the rubber hits the road so to speak). But I think if you can get both - hey, why not take it.

I agree with the dyno stuff. Unless you have a real professional not worth the risk.

It did not cost as much as you think because Nick is very fair with his prices. Why don/t you ask him, no problem with that from my side. The Mondial is my first choice because I can take the kids and my wife for a hot ride. At least I spent the money in the right place and now I have peace of mind. Next winter project is nitrousoxide and modify the ignition.

Chris that is one gorgeous motor love the detail & time spent. The mondail is a matter of choice I guess I would rather have it in a 328gts.I hate to ask because I dont like it when people ask me how much I have in my cars, but if you dont mind in just the motor work what are you in it?? My guess you be at least 20k.Another thing is these 3 series car top out at mid forties it would be hard if not impossible to recoupe more than half your money

I can't really say anymore. Please contact Nick directly. Thanks.

RE: the 348 engine management chip. I have seen them advertised in FORZA and I think italianauto has them. I would be very hesitant to mess with the 348 ECU, but the stock electronics are not the best to begin with.

RE: the 328 engine rebuils ; curious, what is the "special additive you put in the Mobil One oil? Also, costs of rebuild?

Steve:
The part # is 33-2799. The filter has the same shape as the original one but is about half as thick.

Christiank -- can you please confirm the K&N part number for the TR filter (is it the same as shown on the FCA-NW website?)

I am not a big fan of nice looking engines but Nick told me that's what you have to do when you modify it. I don't know about power and torque and I don't want to put it on a dyno and risk that some idiot brakes something. Just two days ago I smoked with my TR a Japanese superbike (couldn't believe it myself but my 2 year old son could testify it as a witness) on the freeway and the Mondial is faster than the TR, that's enough proof for me. For everybody interested, I just put in a new K&N filter in the TR and it sure makes a lot difference in power and adds a nice throttle sound too.

Nice looking engine --- Any details on the HP output? Increase in torque?

a few details as follows:

3.2 liter engine ported & polished cylinder heads, custom spec. Forza Ferrari valve guides & seals for longer life and less oil consumption, intake plenum modified for improved flow to outer cylinders, intake runners port matched and ram effect enhanced by porting in certain areas of the runner, header ports matched to the exhaust side of the cylinder head, custom valve grind, new valve springs, MSD ignition wires custom fitted for stock caps, water pump ported and internally polished with modified bearing design for improved flow and less drag on accessory belt for a cooler running engine, new crank case venting system using a oil seperator and custom designed vent per cylinder bank for lower crankcase pressures, reduced oil consumtion and reduced oil leaks and more power, every bolt, nut, washer and hose clamp replaced with the exception of 4 hose clamps, new fuel injectors, valve covers powder coated, intake plenum re-done in wrinkle finish black with red letters, most aluminum parts that are visible were polished or re-sprayed after being glass beaded, Mobil 1 oil with special additive for lubrication is being used, cylinder head specs were fully documented, misc. oil leaks fixed, high flow exhaust installed.

I had my Mondial 3.2 done by Nick (cylinder heads inc. intake, header, exhaust, K&N, some other small stuff). I am pretty sure that I smoke Williams 512 TR (I mean eat for breakfast).

To the person asking about the aftermarket chips
for the 348:

Watch out, the 348 is already an erratic disaster waiting to happen. After talking to 348 owners who installed chips - their "slow down" lights and "check/1/4" lights came on regularly. They didn't know when to take the car to the dealer or if it was just the chip making the sensors malfunction. Anyone have any other input? Where can you find these 'chips' anyhow?I need to do more research on them...

Seems as if you forgot about William's other 512 project. You are going to need something faster, Jim.

Has any one done any surfaceing or flow work to the heads or changed cams? How about bigger pistons, I have run nitous on my corvette a 125 hp soleniod will not damage forged pistons. It would be cool to have a 328 that would smoke a 512TR.......NO OFFENCE WILLIAM

anyone buy and install and is happy with these aftermarket engine-management IC engine computer chips (I see them for the 348) that claim increased horsepower? I know that they reccommend professional installation (i.e soldering etc) also I have seen aftermarket air induction "coils" for the corvette, will they work on the 348?

intercooled turbo is about the only way to make big power with Ferrari engines cus they r close to maxed out already. Also Turbos add heat to what is already a very hot engine comparment
Koenig also has turbo kits for the 328

You could try a race style ignition system

The Lancia Ferraris that ran LeMans back around 1990 had 328 twin turbo engines making around 700 hp but that wont last long & wont be very reliable

Jim -- if you really want 400 HP out of 3.2 liters (~2 HP/in^3) as stated in your other message you'll probably need some type of positive pressure induction system: 1-800-NORWOOD. Unfortunately, Ferrari engines are already well-designed so they're tough to squeeze with simple bolt-ons. If you would accept something more modest HP-wise, you can try the known methods: pushing the C.R. up (but this is high $ cost/HP gained) and getting more wild on the cams, but the streetability may suffer.

ASIDE FROM INTAKE AND EXHUST UPGRADES WHICH ARE THE FIRST PLACE TO START WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND

u could have some headers made up, then for the track get some racing brake pads & lower it with stiffer springs & shocks & a fat anti sway bar. throw on some real good tires & dont forget to install some race quality stub axles

Performance exhaust and k&n filter would be a good place to start. Assuming engine and clutch are good, the upgrade should net you about 15%
