I used to drive a 308QV to the Hamptons for a couple of years and never had any problems. Of course this is dependant on the specific car. One thing though, the 308 will get quite hot in the interior waiting in the midtown tunnel traffic.

Ferraris excel in two environments; Parked in front of the cafe (thank you pinnifarina!) and a hot hour on the track (thank you Enzo!)

Years ago when I got my first 308, a buddy who had just picked up a new 911 and I took a drive in the wine country of western Oregon one sunny, Sunday morning. We stopped at many of the winerys for sampling and a leisurely breakfast. Everywhere we went, people fawned all over the Ferrari while the poor Porsche went unnoticed. After an entire day of feeling automotively inadequate, my friend asked if I would swap cars for the drive home. I agreed. When we got back, it took several minutes to wrestle my keys back (and hours before his silly grin wiped away).

However, the next weekend when we drove the 911 up to Seattle (about 175 miles) for a few days of running errands around downtown, the 308 stayed parked in my garage...

The moral of the story is that neither car does everything well... pick your poison.

I think the scene in the movie Against All Odds with James Woods driving a black 308 and Jeff Bridges driving a red 911 says it all. One of the
best driving scenes in a movie if you ask me.

I wonder if I should make a comment about the fun of having a reliable daily driver? Woo Hoo! :)

Here's another way to look at it:

Do you want a high maintenance but gorgeous girlfriend or a reliable average looking one? beauty has its price :-)

My feeling with any exotic sports car (and other exotic things)is that if you have to ask the question then the car is not for you since you are thinking with the wrong organ. this cars are not rationale decisions they are emotional. All those I know that love ferrari's never thought about anything else, they HAD to have it. You ahve really got to want it to deal with it in the city. Mike and Jim got it right - it is more than drive its a feeling

Hey, The Ferrari has other external benefits. My wife gets excited just driving in it. Then I get to drive her (after the car is back in the garage). Try getting that twofer in a Porsche!!

Wes, it all depends how much fun and additional zest to your life you want to have. The Porsche can get you there with pretty good/excellent performance, but the Ferrari will move you in more ways than one.

The 911 would be a better choice for a every day commuter car.Ferrari to me is a weekend cruiser and if well sorted out is dependable but the porsche has no where near the fun factor the ferrari has of all my cars it still gives me a woode

Wes,
I think I am the expert here. I do this every wknd. Trust me Enzo had no clue about the Grand Central or the LIE when he designed the 308. ground clearence is insuffficient. the cooling is innsufficient, the a/c does not exist, the body work can't take the beating, the suspension can't handle the third world roads, it is like trying to race secretariat on cobblestones. You REALLY HAVE TO BE A FERRARI CRAZY to have them in NYC and be comfortable with really driving these cars. There are some of us though and there sure are a lot of Ferrari already on LI and many fine service and tuners out on LI but few in NYC (most Ferrari owners treat their cars as if they are museum curators. Trust me any car treated like a museum piece and getting the love and care (and few miles) they give these cars would be great. They don't know how ill suited these cars really are for urban environments and how bad they can rattle and and sound and drive and how badly they are assembled, the cars are not designed for NYC area conditions so will do poorly in that area -- you need a limo or take the helicopter. That said the 911 is built like it is carved out of one solid piece of granite ( others may say it is carved out of a solid piece of some other substance) I have driven friends 911's ( in NYC everyone has one or a BMW) and they are perfect for your needs or I would suggest a year old BMW convertible 320i--perfect for your needs. For me I can't stand the utilitarian Porsche and BMW and that everyone has one ( and enjoys it problem free!)but I respect them as the best car in their class for this job. I love my Ferraris and their problems and no trunks and rarity and their spirit -- they have a unique charachter. You have to love 'em have 'em in NYC. If you get a 308, let me know I will save you a seat with the rest of us in the asylum!

There's no doubt the 911 is far more reliable. The last 911 I owned, I kept for 10 years and it was practically bullet proof. However, I just traded it up for a 348ts because.... it's a ferrari !

I don't think this would stress either car. Yeah, Porsche probably with fewer gremlins. NYC should not be difficult to find a good mechanic for either car. Really, the answer lies in your own heart. Which car do you really want?

I live in manhattan and i am considering buying a 308 or 328, but i am concerned about reliability.

Can these cars handle being driven from NYC to Long Island (About 1 hr) every week end in the summer?

Is the 911 better suited to my situation?
