I got to stand beside Joe Frasier a few years ago and I was surprised how short he was. I am 6' and I had to look down at him. I did not call him "Shorty" however.

Marvin Hagler was pretty good in his prime. Not too many people wanted to fight him. Hearns, Mugabi and Leonard vs Hagler were something else.

Hagler lives in Italy and may even drive a Ferrari now :-)

I saw recently on "E True Hollywood Story" or some similar program that Mike Tyson is a horrible driver and can't actually use most of what he has. (Car wise that is) I think it was Gus who was talking about it. He also got two NYC cops suspended after he had a minor fender bender in his Bentley. While still at the scene he decides he just doesn't want to mess with the car so he tosses the keys to the Officers at the accident and tells them they can have it! (NYPD apparently has policy against this sort of thing)

Bruce,
Glad to hear that phrase. Watching those early UFC matches were great. Royce Gracie is
one of my favorite NHB fighters.

James,
Muay Thai boxing is very effective, the forces
involved with the elbow and knees are wicked. The use of a vertical elbow under the chin like a
boxer uses an uppercut would imediately end most street clinches at tie up.

I prefer Muay Thai boxing myself.
It's great cardio and teaches you how to use your knees and elbows in such a way that you can smash them off somebodys face.

Now were talking about a subject I have a passion for. Martial artist off and on for 25 years; various styles, Shotokan karate taught me strong hand and feet techniques, Kung-fu taught me misdirection of energy and flow. Currently have been studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for my groundfighting. School also shares space with a Muay Thai worldchampion but like my brain cells the way they are thankyou.
In my humble opinion,
1) Bruce Lee was the man; for his size he was
the best fighter pound for pound in the
world. His life was training for combat,
24/7. Could he beat so and so, nobody
will ever know he's dead. Never had the
pleasure of meeting and training with him
up here in Seattle. Just a slightly
different era.
2) Best fighters on a one dimensional style
are wrestlers. No not the WWF types
although I'm sure they are plenty tough but
collegiate wrestlers, jiu-jitsu fighters,
judo practitioners. If you ever get into
altercation with one of these gents you
will know what I'm talking about. If I was
a betting man I would take a 50+ year old
Dan Gable to win over Roy Jones Jr. in a
streetfight.
3) Boxing is a very effective method of self-
defense; don't get me wrong. They are
light years ahead of the commercialized
McDojo's out there. That point karate
stuff was and is not realistic fighting.
To say that I could have killed and maimed
you if I didn't pull my punch and didn't
have these pads on is almost laughable.

Would I want to fight Mike Tyson? No way!
But I know alot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters
that would put their money where their mouths is for a fight.

Someone posted on another forum about Tyson's Diablo. Supposedly it was twin turbocharged.

Do the Diablo's have carbon fiber bodies? Only reason I ask is because the body panels on his car were carbon fiber... also was painted yellow and he left some areas un-painted with just clear coated carbon fiber. Pretty slick complete with HRE's...

Oh Ken, no No NO!

Boxing is not drag racing, its F1. Its enjoyable to watch but slightly confusing to a new person. Ask your wife to tell you how a match is scored. The ways to compare them are endless I'm sure. To be a great boxer takes years and years of dedicated hard work and some natural ability. It takes amazing hand eye coordination and lightning reflexes. How could you compare it to drag racing, if you don't like it say so, but please don't degrade it. There are millions of subtle nuances to boxing that it takes years of watching to see clearly. They aren't just smacking each other; they are imposing their will upon one another.

Street fighting is drag racing, no skill needed anyone can do it. All you need to be a good street fighter is a high tolerance for pain, a fist, a forehead, maybe a foot, and 1/2 a brain.

I can't say anything about Karate or the other martial arts, but I'm sure the full contact varieties are very close in nuances to boxing. The non-contact varieties are more like dancing than fighting, which takes a different kind of skill, not to be confused with less skill.

Street fighting is an art unto itself. Boxing is not fighting; it's boxing. Street fighting is F1 racing (you have to do everything well); boxing is drag racing (just do one or two things well).

My 11 year old is going for his black belt in Shidokan Karate in Sept; I can still beat him in a match (I have no fighting experience at all) but he'll take me in a couple more years.

JScott,

I didn't say Tyson was the greatest, but rather one of the greatest (in his prime). I don't want to compare him with anyone of street or karate fighting stock as thats like comparing a Ferrari with a Supra, they are to different to compare.

You mentioned Ali and while his press conferences of old and current myth are monstrous his actual fighting ability was not in the same league as history would/will portray it. He was no doubt a tremendous fighter in a time of some great fighters (Joe Frazier was also a great fighter) and I can't argue against him also being one of the greatest fighters in boxing history.

None of that can take away from what Tyson did in the 80s; he was an amazingly dominating boxing monster. He was one of the greatest and still the youngest ever unified heavy champion. I don't want to argue too much because I don't exactly love the man Tyson seems to have become.

I can't judge Mike Tyson as a man, I don't know him. Its possible its an act and if so its a very profitable act. I don't believe it is an act, but then again I don't know him. Like him or not as you see him on TV, he was one of the greatest boxers ever, period. I didn't say THE greatest boxer ever. I reserve that title for Roy Jones Jr. who is the best boxer I have ever seen.

Tim: Having once competed in professional semi-contact karate(heavy weight black belt division), I can tell you that Bruce Lee was a great athlete and master of Karate, but I question his street fighting ability. Tyson is an animal whom I have no respect for. I once had an exhibition fight with Chuck Norris (ok- I was really just the demo-dummy), he is much smaller than me but hit like a frieght train! I would bet the house on him over Tyson. Best fighter I ever met. Norris would take the knees and if Tyson can't stand, he can't fight. A boxer stands open to lower body attack. A good street fighter presents a narrow target both upper and lower body. Norris did a number on me and I was ranked at the time (1979). I'm now an old guy, Norris is as old as me but can still deliver. Who says Tyson was the greatest, did we forget about Ali, Leonard and a score of others? Maybe I'm just too old.

Speaking of tyson, i remeber a few months ago this heated debate started in senior hallway, heres what it was about. Its a hypothetical situation (obviously) but if both were in their prime, who would win in a fight, tyson or bruce lee?

I am embarrassed to know that I have a car of the same marque as that low life. In fact, it really hurts to know that I am of the same species as him. But, then again, mayby I'm not.

Harlan, good point but I think a lot of people today have forgotten who Tyson once was, they just want to see a good come back, or maybe they just feel sorry for him.

I've seen his cars because he used to have them modified in Fort Lee, NJ. His F50 was awesome. That car doesn't come with anything and they were putting some sick stereo system in it, I think they had to cut out some fibreglass on the dash. He also had a lambo roadster.

As far as the other Tyson -tyson Beckford. I saw him a few months ago in Edgewater riding some crazy modified bike.

Michaelangelo, which dealership do you work for?

Martin:

The different standard is that O.J. brutally killed two people, and at least criminally got away with it (I'm unsure if they plaintiffs in the civil case have gotten any compensation from him as of yet). Tyson is just an ass. There is a difference. IMHO

Martin,

He gets breaks because people remember him from when he was one of most amazing boxer to ever step in the ring. They don't want to see what he is now. The general public just remembers what he was. Mike Tyson in his prime was truly one of greatest boxers to ever live. He is now only a small fraction of that fighter and no longer even seems to be the same man. I can tell you Mike Tyson the fighter is popular today because twenty years ago at age 18 he would lay flat any one put into the ring with him, and not just an average man but men who dedicated there lives to fighting.

They were probably back on the way to the Repo-lot.
I do not know why Tyson gets still so much publicity. After beating up his girlfriend and biting Hollyfields ear he still gets break after break and OJ gets accused of murder when a bird dies in his yard! Double standard?
