What guys at work will do is, rather than selling their cars, they'll run a square pool. A few hundred bucks/square--depending on the car. Amazing how willing people are to get in. |

Thanks for the responses. If I where to continue with this, I would likely go to jail and be sued by half the contestants.......whereas, Chris (if ever caught)would probably just get a slap on the wrist, go home with your money, and start another profitable scam!!!!!!!!!!! It seems that crime does pay. Oh well; I will just continue to advertise my car in the Chicago Tribune |

Henry My advertising agency that works for our company recieved 10 mountain bikes on our behalf to be given to our board to use in any way. Well being upstanding folks that we are instead of keeping them for personal use as our former agency suggested we decided to have a raffle for our customers. I can't tell you what a joke this turned out to be. To give away 10 bikes for free that cost us nothing ended up costing us like $5,000 r so in legal fee's an specialized promo companies that do this to protect ourselves from possible litigation i guess an fed/state reg's. |

two years ago i tried to "give" my night club away in an essay contest. it was $100 to enter. we didn't get the required number of entries so i refunded all the moneys less 5% for administration fees. the reason you can't have a raffle is it's considered a lottery and the state doesn't like individuals horning in on their turf. if each entries accompanied by an essay as to why the person deserves the car or some such thing then it's legal.you'll need a few friends to be judges you'll need to open a non interest bearing bank account to hold the entry fees until the judging is complete. i set up a web site with all the rules and info on it and ran the contest for a year. i have seen it work before so give it a try. if you need any more info email me. |

The idea of the essay contest is that its not a lottery/gambling because it not chance based. I know Canada has some goofy law (or used to) that all contests must have some element of skill. That's why in US magazine contests you'll see a disclaimer that Candian winners are required to sucessfully complete a math question to claim their prize. |

Jay, I can just imagine what kind of essay I would need to raffle off the 88 TR........... In other words, if it for a charity, then it is OK, but, if for personal use, it is illegal.......makes NO sense to me. |

wait, now I remember, it was an essay contest. You'd pay the money to enter. The best essay on why you wanted the home (determined by the homeowners) was the winner. The prize was the house. I think that is how they got around the gambling law. |

Mitchell, If this is truly gambling, then I can appreciate your point.......since I would NOT want to break any laws. However, isn't this what Jay is talking about regarding the home?.....is this also illegal. It would seem to me that the illegal part would be referring to something that the seller has to hide.......which I would not. |

Henryk, I've heard this being done with houses. You'd pay $500 to enter. Once a certain predetermined amount of tickets were sold a winner was "pulled from a hat". Customer is happy because he got a house (or car) for $500 and the seller is happy cause he got his asking price. I'd do it! |

The recent raffle "SCAM' by Chris is regrettable, however, it did give me an idea!!!!!!!!!! I have a 1988 TR for sale, for $49,900, with 63,000 miles. The car is in excellent shape, considering the mileage, with no rust, accidents, leather tears, or even engine smoke. Would it make sense to raffle the car off? I would like you opinions. We used to sell our cars through newspaper ads.......now there is e-Bay to auction them off........why not a legitimite raffle. This may not be the right time to put this in, but, what the heck? I propose the following: 1) Submit pictures of the car, serial number, and copy of WI title, with my name on it. 2) Give my legal name and address.....NO P.O. Box. 3) Give my Fed. ID #. 4) Get a certified accounting agency to do the actual drawing.....name, and address would be disclosed, prior to the raffle. 5) Charge $1000 per ticket, with a minimum of 55 tickets to sell........there will be fees. Or charge $500 per ticket, with a minimum of 110 tickets to sell.........etc. 6) The deadline would be at the time that the minimum amount of tickets would be sold, plus 30 days. 7) All money would be put into an escrow account, verifiable by the accountant. 8) This would NOT be charity auction, hence, the money would NOT be deductible, and I would NOT need a State charity number. 9) If the minimum would not be achieved, then ALL money would be refunded, less fees. Does this sound feasible? To the attorneys.......have I missed anything? 3) |
