It used to be on the old Speedvision. It was from the 70s & 80s, where a camera was strapped on the roll hoop of a bunch F1 cars, mostly during practice & qualifying) (this before BernieVision...). Remember, this was back when these cars had stick shifts & very few electronics, so the drivers actually DROVE (and shifted) their cars. The sound is superb, and watching these guys steer, slide, shift, coundersteer, etc. with tha sounds, is increduble. Very gritty & real, and makes you appreciate how difficult it was (and still is) to drive F1 cars at speed.

"Rendezvous" is awesome. The car in "Ferris Bueller's", though, is a bad fake. It's not even an exact replica and is somewhat of an amalgam of LWB and SWB styles. What is "Lap of the Gods"? I missed that one.

Yes...right after he purchases his dream car, while driving down the main boulevard at night -- he stops at an intersection and some girls in another car are giving him the eye. As he floors it to show off, the car starts going crazy -- doors opening and closing, lights flashing, etc. Rather funny scene. Irony is, from what Lambo owners tell me of their experiences, this replica might not be to much different from an original (LOL) . Joking aside, the Countach is still on my wish-list.

Speaking of kitcars...anyone ever see the 1988 movie "It Takes Two"? It's about these two childhood sweethearts Travis & Stephi who are forty-eight hours away from their wedding. But when Travis heads to Dallas to buy his dream car (a Lambo Countach replica), he meets a wild woman who takes him on the ride of his life!

The Lambo, even though it was a "replica", was very well done -- perhaps a Prova?

Here's a pic of the video cover:

Not be the best... but makes me laugh.

Funniest Fcar movie- Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, had a 246 Dino at the end.. with cops chasing them on dirt roads and into a weed field.

Best chase scenes:

1. Ronin (Both scenes)
2. Bullitt (of course)
3. Goldeneye (Mostly because of the cars involved and that look on Miss Onatopp's face)

My favorite Ferrari to ever appear in a movie:

The Thomas Crown Affair. 275 GTS/4 NART Spyder s/n 09437. This was the first of the ten NART Spyders and the only one with a competition history, having finished 17th in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1967. The car was featured in the Sept 1967 issue of road and track and then was repainted a deep red before appearing in The Thomas Crown Affair with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. A sad point: in the Director's Commentary on the DVD director Norman Jewison refers to the car as "the new Jag that was out at the time."

You guys are forgetting some of at awesome driving in one of the James Bond flicks where he is in the vintage Aston Martin and he races the chick in the F355 GTB..

Another great movie to catch is "No Man's Land" where Charlie Sheen steals Porsches with a rookie cop...A 365 Boxers makes a small appearence in the movies

I should not have forgotten the two movies that probably put the Ferrari bug in.

The first was Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and the second was Weird Science. I doubt either get top billing for car scenes but they seemed to work on me.

Actually one of the best movies I have seen witha Ferrari and a good raace at it was "Munsters go Home" the movie. In the end I believe it was a 250GT spyder racing against all these great cars including the Munstermobile. Has to be one of the greatest if not funniest races I have ever seen.

My favorite Ferrari movie is definitely "La Passione". It was directed by Chris Rea who is a big Ferrari fan. The story is about a poor italian family living in Great Britain selling italian ice cream there. The smallest son is a ferrari addictive and becomes a big fan of von Trips and the shark nose F1 Ferraris of 1961(F156). There is a lot of previously unreleased film footage taken by von Trips himself. You can also hear some really nice tracks written by Rea and sung by Shirly Bassey.
The story is basically about this boy becoming rich and realizing his dreams about owning very rare Ferraris of the 60s. On the other hand he looses contact to his family and gets lonely. A quite interesting story with lots of nice Ferraris from the 60s, great original film clips and a fantastic sound track.
This movie should definitely not be missed by any serious Ferrari enthusiast.

Con saluti cordiali,

Did anyone see the glass house that came out on DVD/video six months ago? Towards the end of the movie, they used a red Ferrari TR that was destroyed in a head on collision with a semi truck. I hope that was a kit car used for the stunt It brought a large tear to my eye to see that happen to a Ferrari. I think they should have used a Porsche instead

Glad Norman mentioned it - I have to say "Mad Max" was pretty amazing for a low-budget indie film. Capturing speed on film and making it look realistic is very difficult. Mad Max used a lot of low angles on moving cars with wide lenses, plus the stunts are pretty phenomenal. Those Aussies are balls out! Check out the motorcycle rider who spills and has the bike nail him in the back of the head. Yes, it's low budget and has a certain comic book charm, but it's extremely well done.

I just spent six months working with the director George Miller on Wonder Woman up at Warner Bros. and I can't say enough how impressed I was with him. He's brilliant and a terrific guy - in fact, he was a doctor (pediatrician) before he became a movie director. I've been fortunate enough to have worked with the likes of Sam Mendes, Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, James Cameron, and others and George Miller still remains one of the best learning experiences I've had.

OK, you guys. I saw a great movie on tv at the beach last year. It was made in the 1950s and was about a guy on a Ferrari race team. There were realistic crashes. Some characters were killed in these crashes. His romance was a subplot. Basically he was struggling with the idea of racing with death looming because of crashing. I forgot what it was called. It was a great period Ferrari movie.

Anybody know?

Loved "American Graffiti", I really liked "Gone in 60 seconds" the new version. Of course "Grand Prix" is a no brainer.

"The Rock" used a kit for the 355 scene. If you look closely when the car crashes the entire side of the car comes off in one piece! No opening doors.

I also love the "Cannonball run" movies, something about Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr dressed up as priests driving a 308!

Le Mans was the best in my opinion. Interesting story: was filmed mostly at Sebring that year. McQueen's car was the Prosche and Andretti was driving the Ferrari at the end. Even though filming, the Porsche had about a 3 minute lead in the last hour or so. Andretti broke the lap record 3, 4 times catching the Prosche to go onto the win (not shown in the actual footage) Andrette at the end: "There was no way I was letting that f*cking actor win."

King of the Mountain: "Time is speed, speed is time"-Dennis Hopper.

Two Lane Blacktop: one of my favorites, partly because one of the scenes was filmed here in Arkansas about 15 miles outside of my hometown. It was also filmed in an almost documentary fashion and captured the times very well. Two guys with nothing to do just drifting around in a '55 Chevy. Reminds me of my friends '57 Chevy and the times we spent riding around to nowhere in general.

Bit of trivia: The '55 Chevy in Two Lane Blacktop was also one of several '55 Chevys used in American Grafitti. They used one 55 for interior shots, the Grafitti car for wide shots, another 55 for the rollover scene, and a fourth car for the burning car after the rollever. Or so I read.

I would like to hear some of these Renny Harlin stories...it just seemed to kill Geena's career to appear in "Cutthroat Island" and "The Long Kiss Goodnight". A shame really, it seems like her talent's being wasted.

Oh yeah, car movies.

I like...
  • Ronin
  • Gumball Rally

  • Grand Prix
  • Le Mans
  • Bullitt

I will have to agree with Edward and disagree with Chris. I think that Vanishing Point is the best car movie out there. I did see it in the theater when it originally came out and have watched it repeatedly since then. I think the generation comment from Chris is valid as it really was a movie for it's time. I still like to relive those days occasionally and Vanishing Point still hits home for me. Just my 2 cents.

It's come up here many times, but I'm with Ross - Grand Prix, Le Mans, and Bullitt. Still haven't seen Rendezvous - too expensive for ten minutes!

I think the Ferrari vs. Porsche race that Ernie was referring to is "Against All Odds". It really is a fantastic scene (I've got it on DVD). Love the 308. The DVD has commentary in which the actors and director give some interesting background about filming the race.

And finally, "Driven" has got to be the biggest blight to auto racing ever. I used to work for Geena Davis when I first came to Hollywood and I can attest firsthand to what a simian, knuckle-dragging moron Renny Harlin is. I even suffered through part of his commentary on the DVD. In the opening minutes, he talks about how the project came to "fruitation"...ummm, I think the word you're looking for Renny would be "fruition". Granted, English isn't his first language, but I've got some Renny stories that are truly beyond belief. Too bad, because he truly seems passionate about F-1, he just doesn't have the talent and vision to deliver it in the way Frankenheimer could decades earlier.

I picked up "Winning" with Paul Newman and "Vanishing Point" and really wasn't too impressed with either. Vanishing Point seems to be the forerunner to Dukes of Hazard, but it may be a generational thing.

Bottom line, I wish more people in Hollywood understood that truly exciting car chases like Bullitt, Ronin, the French Connection, etc. are all about real speed and driving, not ridiculously impossible "Michael Bay" type crap. "

Just my opinion, but Hollywood is my business and someday I'd love to direct a REAL car chase film like the ones that inspired me.

Best,
~chris
