Correction: The mark is the first mark to the right of the "PM 1-4" Good luck. |

A bottle of white out makes a wonderful gear and timing mark reference marker. |

I hope you are wrong and i am right becasue I lined mine up on the mark after the PM 1-4. Car runs great. Mark the marks with some chalk, cam too. They will be easier to see for a while, then the chalk soke up some oil and the cam marks will turn black again. 1980 308 gtsi |

Thanks for posting this. When I do mine it will be good to know these little details that sometimes get left out of instructions. When you're in the middle of something like that, you never really know if you're just missing something obvious or your car is different than others. Good luck with the seal replacement... |

NOW I SEE IT!! It was completely obscured by the dust. I started up the engine & held the tip of a small wire brush against the flat edge of the flywheel while I sprayed BrakeKlean up-rotation of the brush. The letters are the full height of the flat edge of the flywheel between the pressure plate & the tip of the pointer. The timing mark is just BEFORE the letters like this: " | PM 1-4 ". After several tries, I've got the pointer almost dead on. It's off by about the width of the mark. This should be good enough to let me see if I've got the cam marks lined up or if I've got to go around again. If they're lined up, I'll be able to lock things down & it'll give me a good starting point when doing the final cam timing after fixing my oil leaks. |

I'm in the middle of pulling my forward cams to fix oil leaks. I'm using Ric Rainbolt's "Timing Belt Replacement Procedure" as a guide. However, when I removed the timing cover & turned the engine around by hand, I never saw the letters "PM 1-4" or timing marks. (There are letters aren't there??) How large/legible are the letters & marks? I'm assuming they are on the edge of the flywheel between the pressure plate & the flywheel teeth. Presumably at least the marks should line up with the timing pointer. My flywheel has the usual coating of dust, but I think I should have been able to spot them thru it. |
