Terry, another simpler way is to remove the oil fill cap and look at the cam alignment mark in relation to the bearing cap. If the crank is at TDC and the notch on the cam is lined up with the notch on the bearing cap, its at TDC #1. I did this with mine when I installed the distributor after the engine was back in the car. |

I put masking tape over the plug hole in the cam cover. got a good seal.... popped off on compression stroke. Amazing when the simple solution requires too much thought. Doh! |

Ed, do you mean to just guess and see if it runs? If thats not going to harm anything if I am wrong (and Murphy says I will be) then Ill have a go. |

Do the latter of your choices and that will be the easiest. |

Terry, You will either have to pull off the cam cover or the timing belt cover and check the marks. Either one is a pain in the ass. |

Is there any way to tell if #1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke? I need to set my timing and cannot tell if I am arriving at TDC on the compression stroke or not. Of coarse you cannot get a finger on the plug hole, and I tried putting a rubber stopper into the plug hole but apparently the air leaks around the threads. In any event, the stopper was never dislodged or moved even though the engine turned several times by hand. I am at a loss as to any way of telling unless I totally remove the cam cover again. I really dont want to do this. I can see the #1 intake valve through the oil filler hole, but dont know where that valve should be during the compression stroke. Should I just bring it to TDC, line up the PM 14 mark on the flywheel, point the rotor at the #1 cylinder and give it a shot at cranking? I am worried that if I am not on the compression stroke this could have adverse effects. Besides just not running. |
