My rack did the same. My mech did the job. I dont think you have to remove the entire rack, just the clamps. I changed the bushings and shortened (2 mm) the tubes, which the screws runs through and that goes through the bushings, steering rack and the clamp. That will increase the load on the bushings which will be slightly stiffer. There's probably no problem with your bushings, mine were OK. I'm also interested in stiffer bushings since this modification was not enough. I'll probably go for aluminium bushings which might cause some alignment problem for the second clamp screws due to zero flex (which rubber bushings have). Ciao Peter |

In late July, I had my car safety inspected (Missouri) and they told me the steering rack was loose on its mounts. This past weekend, I was checking it out and what I see is the bushings which are in the mounts seem to have some give. I am guessing around 1/16th of an inch. I want to replace these bushings and want to inquire about three things: 1) To replace these mount bushings, do you have to remove the steering rack? 2) Does anyone have a procedure for this? 3) Other than the stock parts, does anyone make a urethane or other replacement part which would last longer? All help appreciated.
