Thanks again, Bruno. Now--for the real news. It is with great pleasure that I bring this thread to a close--my baby finally started and is running great! I didn't get around to replacing anything, but I did do a lot of wire tightening, distri cap cleaning, contact cleaning, plug wire retightening, ground tightening, etc and, thank God, one or all of those things worked. So, thank you all for your great advice--I truly appreciate your expertise and input. What a great website! Vroooom! |

Bill sorry for confusion.I should have looked up your part#. Call 732-542-5600 ask for GINO. If there is anything that can go in there he will know and most likely stock it. |

Thanks, guys-I may be buying a new coil tomorrow at Wide World of Cars, but I'll contact Ed to see what he has. Do you know anything about the pick-ups I asked about? |

Bill, Sorry, When Bruno asked for a part no. for the coils I figured you had the older 308 coil set up. Bruno his coils are different from the coils we are running on our 308s. Bill I still think you could have a coil breaking down. I think, but I could be wrong, that Ed Gualt had some coils for sale like the ones on your car. Sorry for the tail chase. Regards, |

Yet another Q--a mechanic told me that I may have damaged one of the 3 pick-ups on my engine , which could also knock out the spark for a bank of cylinders. I think I can find 2 of the pigtail connectors , but not the 3rd. Does anyone know whereabouts the pickup connectors can be found? Also, once found, how can I test them to see if they're good or not? |

Bruno and Magoo--I just checked out the Accel coil you recommended at Advance Auto and it didn't look anything like the stock coil or connection on my car ( '85 308 QV ). On my stock coils there are 2 push-on connectors on each side of the coil, whereas the Accel 8140 had the typical cylindrical shape and only 2 threaded post connectors. Are you sure of the # or did you modify your stock wire ends to fit the Accel posts? Also, if so, did you just combine the 2 wires on each side to mate up to the posts? |

Bruno--what brand and # plugs are you using? I'm going to have my coil tested this evening and I'm going to try to find that Accel part today as well. |

Are you guys running the accel coils with points or electronic ignition or are the resistances the same so it doesn't matter? |

Another Q--with the Accel coils, does one need to cut the wire ends to connect to this coil or do the Ferrari wires fit appropriately. Also, is there anthing I should be aware of / or any tricks in removing the Ferrari coils? Sorry for these basic Q's, but I'm not a mechanic and I'm feeling ( tripping?) my way into this. Thanks, again. |

Thank you for the input, gents. I'll be pursuing the coil question first. A couple of more Q's: #1-- If it is OK, how would I determine if it is the ECM module dysfunction? #2--How does one disconnect the coil wire from the distributer cap? I didn't see any set screw for that wire, as there are for the others.I presume there is one under the center center spring/electrode, but I didn't want to yank anything out without knowing for sure. #3--with the problem encountered last evening, a good amount of raw gas was dumped into the cylinders and cat. Can I encounter any danger of fire trying to start the car toight, 24 hrs later. |

Bruno that part no. is 8140. Accell is the brand name found at Pep Boys and other auto stores. Just could correct your problem since you said the problem seemed to "shift" when you changed coils around. |

get 2 accell coils fom local auto store. they are universal I believe part number is 8120 or close to it. They fit, mount and work fine. About $30.00 each. I run them in my car. Good place to start. If the part number is wrong tell me an I will look at mine for the right number. It is the universal accell coils. |

It could be your ECM module. Each bank has it's own ECM module. |

This is part 2 of my thread "sputtering 308". When I went to start the car tonight, not only did it sputter, but the entire front bank of cylinders weren't getting any spark at all. To test, I pulled the wires ( #'s 1--4) off of each plug while running and there was no change in idle whatsoever. Then, upon inspecting the plugs, they were totally wet w raw gas. I pulled the distrib cap, cleaned the inside and rotor contacts and reinstalled--with no change noted. I also, switched coil wires and the problem seemed to shift. So, my uneducated guess is that the coil or distributer are defective in some way. My questions are: are the coil and /or distributers expensive? Is it difficult to test the coil ( ie can any auto shop do it )? Can you recommend some good, reliable, and reasonably priced parts distributers for these parts? As always, your recommendations are much appreciated.
