Mitchell -- I don't have a clue on my end what actual oil pressure would produce 150 ohms at the oil pressure sender (but it's got to be fairly low considering the test RPM).

why don't you get a mechanical gague, for testing purposes, replace the oil pressure sending unit with the mechanical gague, and get a direct oil pressure readout

Good news.

I primed the pump by pooring a quart of oil into the oil line that leads to the pump, the oil radiator, and into the oil line leading into the block from the oil filter.

Punched the connector to the solenoid, the engine spun and after 30 seconds, there was oil dripping out the cam shafts ends, the oil pressure gauge reads 150 ohms (instead of 320 ohms at rest).

Steve Magnuson, since you know that the oil pressure gauge is resistive (and not voltage), I assume you also know what 150 ohms stands for in terms of oil pressure measured in psi??

I breathed a sign of relief and next will be distributor timing. Thanks all.

It will take quite a while for the oil pressure to come up as there are a lot of voids to fill. The grease in the pump should have primed it.

The pump needs to be primed. Since the engine is assembled, I would pour oil down the cooler line that attaches to the block. This looks to head straight to the pump relief valve. The goal is to get oil into the pump to seal the gears. You should have pressure once oil is at the pump and the filter and cooler are full. Try putting more oil in as well incase the cooler and filter as well as the plumbing use up most of the 5 you put in.

Hi all.

My engine is totally buttoned up and ready to drop into the car and I wanted to run one more test of oil pressure to make sure. I really do not want to install it and have it back out again so I am doing as much bench testing as possible.

With the engine sitting on a dolly, I installed the oil hoses, oil radiator, oil filter and hooked a meter to the oil pressure sender in resistance mode, filled the engine with 5 quarts of 20-50 Castrol (a little low, I know), hooked up the starter to the engine and jumped the solenoid and saw the engine spin. I tested for compression first and found Good news: I have positive compression 130 -150 PSI all around (Good considering the rings have not bedded in yet)

Then I looked for oil pressure and found Very bad news: I have absolutely no OIL pressure reading. Disconnect the oil hose to the engine and see it absolutely DRY.

I NEED BIG HELP. I have engine assembly lube on all the contact and bearings but do not want to
continue running dry and fry the bearings again.

Before engine assembly, I cleaned all oil passages with brushes and blow air through them and found no obstructions. I looked at the oil pump (at the front timing case) very carefully. All gears are fine but saw one hair line scratch around the oil pump case. Posted a message here and Ric Rainbolt said that it should not cause oil pressure drop.

During assembly, I smeared the oil pump gear with engine grease. Measured the backlash and everything seemed fine then.

QUESTIONS:
1. Does the oil pump need to be primed, and HOW?
2. The crank case is vented to the atmosphere right now, does that matter (I don't think so).
3. Any other thoughts much appreciated.

If anyone with experience in this wants to call me, or wants me to call them, please leave a phone number here or send me an email. My phone number at home is (650) 654-7635. I am not installing this engine in my car until I get positive oil pressure reading with it on the bench.

Thanks a million.
