I correct myself. The inside of the "knuckle" is nurled and the aluminum plug is smooth so it can not absolutely seal without some kind of sealer. The "red loctite" I used is called valve seat sealant and is as good as permanent glue. Once it goes in, it only get machined out, not pulled out. So, well, I guess I will stay with this for now until the next time the cam shafts are pulled for one reason or another. |

Sure if there is no welding slag etc. that pops into the top of the head. If you are going to do it right...then Do it right...take the cams out. BTW, I would never just use red loctite. At least have a very tight interference fit and use the green 609 retaining compound. The aluminium and steel with temperature changes etc is destine to fail and with red loctite...that's going to be an engine looser. |

Guys at Norwood told me the only way to do it right is to have the plugs TIG welded in place. They say this can be done with the cams in the car as long as the person doing the job is good. I am thinking about going this route on my rear bank cam when I remove the distibutor. |

I fabricated the two aluminum cam shaft plugs at the ends of the two camshafts driving the distributor. Installed them with red loctite. On the oil pressure bench test, I found that the plugs did not totally stop oil from coming out the ends of the cams. Granted, the oil did not shoot out at 40 psi pressure either, but I am a little disappointed really. I thought that these plugs will totally plug the ends and keep the oil from leaking out into the distributors. Any expert thoughts? |
