It is located on the front of the engine just above the oil pan joint (on a 328). The only thing that gets my oil temperature above 250 is sustained high rpms such as what you do at track events during summertime. When I would lighten up on the rpms, the temperature would drop.

Check to see if there are leaves or other rubbish in the intake for your oil cooler. One big leaf is more than enough to affect cooling.

There probably is some ducting leading to the cooler as well - can't remember because I've not looked at mine in a long time.

Thanks for the tips, gents. I should be more clear about the symptom--it didn't fluctuate wildly. it was a steady rise in temp up to that point. The temp would slowly change one way or another depending upon whether I was idling in traffic or cruising at a steady speed. It was rather hot out as well--high 80's and humid. Regardless, I'll check the connections and , if that doesn't work, will get a nrw sender. Now, one more basic question--where is the sender located on the engine? ( I'm obviously new to this). Also, is fluctuation of this sort normal on very hot days? Thanks again.

Bill, mine did the same thing. I disconnected the terminals to the guage and lightly sanded the guage terminals. Then I put new wire terminals on and the temp. fluctations stopped. It's worth a try before buying new sending unit and/or guage.

Buy a new sender for the oil temp gauge. An original Veglia sender is available from T.Rutland's for about $15 or so dollars. My 78 308 GTS started showing real high oil temps, while all the other gauges read normally, and the car drove fine. Replaced the sender, and oil temp readings returned to normal.

I was on a ride today and noticed the oil temp reading rising to nearly 270--it would fluctuate a bit , depending upon the amount of cruising/ stop-and-go driving. It was hot out and there was a bit of stopping involved. Is this expectable and, if not ( or if it rises higher), what would be the cause and fix? During this time, the water temp was only a bit above the normal 195 . Oil pressure readings fluctuated a bit as well, but was solely contingent upon rpm--and appeared normal.
