Terry: Drain both the transfer case AND the transmission. Reinstall those two drain plugs. Remove both the transfer case fill plug and the transmission fill plug, next to the differential. Pour all of your transmission oil (5+ quarts) into the transfer case fill opening. It will, of course fill the transfer case sump, but then will overflow into the transmission via the lay shaft tunnel. Stop filling when oil comes out of the transmission fill hole or you can feel the surface of the oil with a finger inserted into the transmission fill hole. With this procedure, you will have the correct amount in both the transfer case sump and the transmission without all that pesky measuring of 0,17 (european version of 0.17) pints. |

Terry, The easiest way to get the transfer level correct is as follows: Make sure car is level... Remove fill plug from transaxle... Keep adding gear oil to the transfer case (clutch housing) until the oil starts and then stops flowing out of the transaxle fill plug hole... Levels in both the transaxle and transfer case are now correct... Regards, David |

Im changing the gear oil in my '77 308. Drained it from the main gearbox sump and the clutch housing. Went to re-fill and the wonderful owners manual says the clutch housing should be filled with 0,17 pint. Not a . but a , ??? Now Im no mathmatical genius, but if that means .17 pint then isnt that about an ounce? I know that far more than that came out of it! Anyone know in ounces or otherwise how much gear oil should go into the clutch housing on a 308. The manual calls it the clutch housing but Im guessing its actually the transfer gears.... |
