I had the same on my 1983 Mondial QV, turned out to be one of the ignition sensors near the flywheel. It went open circuit causing only one bank to fire & loud backfire of unburnt fuel in the exhaust. There are 2 sensors on a QV engine, you can buzz them out with an Ohm meter easily enough.

On the Mondial there is a diagnostic socket near the front of the engine.

The sensors are a ••••• to remove ( had to take clutch out)

Cheers,

Mario

I believe Nick had helped someone with a similar problem and it was becasue the exhaust cam had skipped a tooth on the pulley. Said it caused it to back fire too.

Gary, if you've confirmed spark to all cylinders and proper ignition timing, I'd pull the cam covers and confirm the cam timing marks all line up. After setting all valve clearances, retiming the cams, and buttoning it up the top end, I started my 308 on 4 cylinders. The rear bank was dead and fuel droplets could be see above the rear bank carbs. It turns out, the rear bank exhaust cam was set to a stray mark or scratch on the cam. Luckily there was no apparent damage and after reseting the errant exhaust cam the car started normally. Is is possible that one of your cams may have jumped a tooth. Bill

Sounds like bad timing!........

Have U checked your relays? I found almost similar problems on my 308qv, except missing the backfiring, and traced it to bad connections on my relays.

Gary,
Check your distributor caps for a crack, (you would be able to see a carbon track from one terminal to another) or moisture in the cap. This happen to me once on a 308 back in 1985.

My 308 1983QV starts up ok but seems to have no power, like it's running on one bank of cylinders. If I shut it off when it is warm then try to restart it turns over fine then it will start with some very loud backfires which leads to the car shutting down. I also noticed the smell of gas. I'm assuming that unburned gas is getting in the muffler, vaporizing and then ingniting which causes the backfiring. This can't be good for the car. I disconected the cold start valve with no significant change. Any help trouble shooting this problem would be appreciated. I hate leaving my can at the side of the road.

Thanks ............. Gary
