Mitchell,

1. Viewed from the distributor side of the engine, the cams rotate clockwise. To retard the timing, rotate the distributor housing clockwise.

2. The condensers are not used with the Crane system. Remove them.

3. I not sure about the rest of the wires. You'll have to consult the installation instructions and/or give Crane Cams a call.

So Bill

Two questions:

1. I nener did notice what direction is the fully retard position, counter clockwise on the distributor?

2. Then, you will disconnect the two green wires previously attached to the condensors mounted to the side of the distributors, correct?

3. Any other connections that need to be "disconnected" and left as "no-connect" like some wires previously connected to coils?

Mitchell,

The tach signal is carried by a brown stripped black (BN) wire on my 78 308. This wire is connected to the (-) terminal on one coil.

Timing should be set to your normal specs. Completely install the Crane system.

When timing the Crane system on my Lotus, I would mechanically set the engine where I wanted spark to occur, in your case 7 BTDC, for cyinders 1-4. Rotate the distributor to the fully retarded position. Turn the ignition on (to the run position - not the starter engaged position) and slowly rotate the distributor in the advance direction. I believe this system fires when the beam is broken by the shutter wheel. In any event, you will hear the discharge. Lock the distributor in this position and you will have 7 BTDC for cyclinders 1-4. Repeat this process for cylinders 5-8, using the second set of timing marks on the flywheel circumference.

Peter,

What do you do with the two small green wires that used to connect to the condensors sitting on top of the distributors? They become no connect?

And, the 75GT4 tachometer signal is fed off a distributor, where and how is that going to work now?

I am getting ready to change to crane cams now that my engine is running good and steady and the advance mechanism seems to work fine.

Their instructions are somewhat confusing. Hopefully the units you have, have the little red LED signal lights on the side. These light-up when the IR signal transmits through the shutter wheel (signaling the "breaking" point).

I followed their instructions on initial IR Sender alignment in the distributor and I put it on the engine. I then brought the crank to the 7°BTDC mark and turned the distributor until the little LED lit up (and a subsequent snap of the coil as it discharged... Good thing my head wasn't in the way...).

I don't know where you'll mount the units, but I found above the driver's side rear wheel well was perfect (lots of empty space there and away from heat sources).

I am about to convert my 308 to electronic ignition by Crane Cams. I read through the instruction and found that for a starting point, they suggest leaving it at TDC and then adjust the pick-up wheel for the ignition module to fire. Then they say to adjust to timing spec by the factory.

The factory spec is 6 degrees advance.

My question is this: is there enough travel on the distributor mounting bolts to actually advance the timing 6 degrees from TDC?

Those who have done this before, what did you find?
