Gents- Please forgive the lack of Technical Verbage, but I thought I should share my experience in general terms. I am on of those guys that just loves my car for the way it looks and knows it's a Ferrari. Not a great detail of what makes it go. I can tell you that my 92 348 had issues when starting from time to time and it was costly to repair. The only reason I was able to find out was b/c my Tech drove my car up his driveway and when he got out he said that my clutch was really tight. He was going to do the 30K serivce since the car was 9 years old. Well, when the motor was dropped, he called me down to the shop to show me where grease was leaking out from a bad seal around the clutch area. I even took a picture b/c he said it I might be looking at $2K Italian Grease @ a minimum. I have that and can have it scanned if anyone is interested in seeing it. I knew I was going to need proof for the wife if you know what I mean! When the flywheel was pulled, he noticed that the ABS componets were worn due to the grease leaking out. The problem was that Ferrari makes you buy a new flywheel rather then sell replacement components. The flywheel alone is $4,000. Labor for the new clutch and flywheel was $1,800 and the new clutch parts was another $1,800 not to mention the $3000 for the service that it was there for in the first place. Add on the Tubi and I was at $13K w/ tax when it was time to take it home. I know the Tubi was not needed, but when you are at $9k already why not go for that extra $2,800? Although the wife did not buy into that. It starts like a completly different car now, and I was told by my Tech that I should have nothing but oil changes from now until 40K. Currently I am at 17K. I am scared to think of what it would have ran if I had taken it to the Dealership. Heck, they wanted $5,500 just to perform the 30K service. I hope this info helps someone out there. Regards, Carlo |

I think you may have hit the problem's bullseye. It is weird but it is a real issue. If the clutch was not done by a authorized ferrari dealer or one very much in the know on this arcane issue of the 348 then they skipped this procedure. The only fix is to drop the bell housing an dpull the clutch (yes, again) and get this special (it is from Agip - It think - the mechanic showed it to me since I was very doubtful)grease in there. |

Very Interesting. The previous owner recently had the clutch replaced. Any idea if the grease can be injected without disassembly? It does seem very strange that bumping the flywheel always seems to solve the problem?? THANKS |

I do not know of course your specific issue but I had very similar symptoms with a new starter and after much hair pulling, my ferrari trained mechanic said this is well known on 348's and the problem is that the flyweel needs a specific quantity of a special grease injected (usually with a clutch change) and that solves the starter problem ---- I know made absolutely no sense to me but what do I know and he is very wise and trustworthy.. it is oddball enough that you might overlook it and you may hear it from somewhere else so you can get some ind. verification , of coursae witht he 348 it could be the starter, the selanoid, the switch or the myriad of electronic/voltage issues but I wanted to point something out that is particular to the 348 that is weird. |

My 348 has developed an intermittent starter failure. It seemed to fail at first only when hot, then would start once cooled. Now it fails more frequently, but it will usually start hot or cold if I put the car in gear and gently roll it, slightly rotating the engine?? When it fails, there's a click on and a click at release, but no effort at all from starter? Other times it starts perfectly? I suspect the starter motor. It looks relatively accessible. Is it fairly easy to remove? Could a local alternator shop rebuild it? Any advice appreciated. Mark |
