James,

I am planning on getting a cherry picker this sunday (today), if you leave your phone number, I'll call you to help. I sure can use 3 extra persons.

Mitchell,
When it comes time to drop your engine in and you need a hand, I would be glad to come over and help if I am free.

Paul,

I weighed the engine/tranny combo with a heavy duty "bathroom" scale, and it is 500 lbs even. Makes sense, from my estimate of the pieces while I was rebuilding it. They do add up to about 500 lbs. So the cherry picker with an extended arm can handle a load of 900 lbs. More than good enough for me.

Yep, very close call. If I had used the hook as a mounting point for the drop in, it would be a total disaster and the insurance company would have totalled the car, for sure. Lucky me, I was not planning on using that hook to drop in the engine. It was used as a convenient point to attach a hoist to lift the tranny off the engine while it was upside down during the disassembly process. The tranny was at best 100 lbs.

The gods were looking in after me.

Nowhere near a thousand pounds. Maybe half that would be my guess considering its aluminum. Lucky you werent positioning it above the engine bay when it let go, that would have been interesting.

I went to lift up the engine to test the mounting points and load balancer. One inch off the wooden dolly and the engine (freshly rebuilt) fell off and back down to the padded wooden dolly. Whew ... no damage. The eye-hook I attached to the ceiling of the garage gave and straightened out. That was way too close a call.

I must get a better, bigger hook, and I want to make sure the cherry picker is strong enough to carry the whole thing.

Anyone knows the full weight of the 308GT4 engine with the tranny in place, the clutch housing all buttoned up, and full with fluids? I am guessing 800-1000 lbs.
