The low cold idle is probably the auxilary air bypass valve has failed in the closed position. To check, you can remove it and stick it in the refridgerator for 20 minutes and see if it opens. If not, you need to replace it.

Also if the coils are old and get hot they can sometimes fail.

I had some very strange recurring problems with my 81. Humidity, heat, etc, would change the nature of the problem. One day OK, then that night total crap. After much aggrivation, it turned out to be the plug extenders.

Bill, I had the same problem. It started as a miss. So, I changed the plugs. Today on our little Louisianna Drive Club, once a month drive it just dropped the front bank.

65 miles from home out in Improve, MS. We switched the digig's same thing. No tach no fire on front bank.

Cure; We cleaned all the contacts on the coil with contact cleaner. Between the tools kits in 3 Ferrari's one Porche and 2 Miata's I think we could have taken the engine out.

Car now has no miss.

I hope it is that simple for you.

Thanks
Kelly in the HOT Humid South. Wishing I was in up State new York

No, it sounds like spark to me. I would try swapping the coils and see if the problem moves, goes away or stays the same. If it moves, the problem is the coil, goes away means bad connection or a broken wire, stays the same, pick another part to try. Id look at the pickups next the ECUs. Work fast, I drove mine up from PA to go to Saratoga with you tomorrow.

Well, I'm back with the same aggravating story. My '85 308 suddenly begins missing at low rpm ( < 2500) and get progressively worse until the entire front bank stops firing. The first time it happened, I just replaced the plugs and it ran like a new car for about 60 miles. Then, it happened again. This time, I cleaned out the front distrib cap, reconnected all of the plug wires, cleaned all of the coil wires /grounds, checked the ECu connections, and cleaned the plugs. Voila--she started right up and has run perfectly for another 60--100 miles. Any ideas about what this is all about? I thought I had it licked, but it's stll here, exactly as befoer. Why would it run so stupendously well by merely changing the front plugs. Something is obviously causing the fouling/ misfire--but not for about 60-100 miles. One other observation is that the cold start sensor doesn't seem to operate lately either. When I start the car, it just idles at 1k immediately--even when running fine with fresh plugs. Could this suggest a fuel problem vs spark problems?
