Paul, I have two original fans from a 75 308 GT4 that I no longer need. Email me if you are interested. Burnell |

Paul, you mention preloading the bearings on the fans, but I noticed the band clamps holding the entire fan-motor to the bracket had an affect on how quiet, or loud the motor ran! Too tight and the thing made a terrible grinding noise. Loosening them up and the noise went away... |

Paul sorry I didn't explain. The timer is for the small fan that is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the charcoal cannister. A small black cylindrical tube like fan in line to the cannister. I should have said as Steve said that it will run 3 mins after the ignition is off. This is what I think you are hearing. My car has the same thing and I can hear it with the ignition off. |

Paul -- the flap on the airbox is closed by a vacuum actuator at shutoff (to keep the fuel vapors contained in the airbox while the little fan blows them over to the charcoal canister) and opens at engine start-up (if still closed). See: http://ferrari.jenkins.org/books/308_parts.pdf and go to TAV 11 (34 of 150) -- the fan blower is item 56. |

This gets better and better. What blower fan? My car has no blower in the engine bay or anywhere near it. I guess Im missing yet another emission device. Can someone show me a picture of this? What is the door on the aircleaner snorkel for? There used to be something to control it in the distant future. I figured some sort of heat stove like a domestic for cold driving but no sign of a connection to get heat from. |

Paul -- the "fan timer" in the passenger footbox on the '78-'79 308s is for the little blower fan that is part of the fuel evaporation control system. It pulls the fuel vapors out of the airbox after shutoff and sends them to the charcoal canister for storage -- I think it's supposed to run for ~3 minutes after shutoff. |

Sounds like more things to go wrong. I guess I should take a peek inside it. So does this mean the fans dont rely on the temp to shut off, they go by a timer instead? Havent seen that used on a car before. What do the non-cat cars have? A longer foot well? The more I learn about these cars, the more it scares me. I need a manual specific to the GTB. My GT4 manual just doesnt cut it. Any sources for one? |

Paul-glad you found the relay noise. I'm no help since all the smog stuff has been removed and the foot box on my car is empty. Roger B. |

Paul, In that box you have the Cat thermocouplers control, and also the fan timer. I think this is the relay you are hearing. The fan timer is the one single box on the right lower side. |

Thanks for the info on the fans, Ill try to get them redone before I go the aftermarket route. I did find the relay just now, since you asked, I went out to the garage to locate it. The source of the relay noise is from the right side foot well inside that steel box under the the carpet. I understand the box has to do with the converter overtemp warning. I havent opened it but thats where the relay is. Why would the relay be energized with the key off? I dont have converters anymore and the warning lights test out when the engine starts. The probes are taped off to a frame rail for reuse in the future. |

Paul-I had both of mine emitting similiar sounds and they both finally expired at the same time. I had one rebuilt at a local electrical motor repair shop. The other one was not repairable. After receiving 3 unacceptable ones I got a good one including fan blade from: AW Imported Auto Parts, 52 Highway 35, Eatontown, NL. 07724 732.542.5600 for $165 plus shpg. It works fine, is the same size as the original and is made by Spal. Roger B. It also doesn't draw many amps like the original Lucas so you don't have to worry about blowing fuses.. By the way, did you find the clicking relay???? |

Paul, I think that someone else took their motors off and repaired them here on the F.C.. Sounds like a bearing may be going letting the shaft sag. You can check the archives but I would give it a try anyway. I don't think they are sealed. JMO |

Ive been putting up with an intermittant squeel/vibration/handgrenade type noise from my rt fan. Ive adjusted the preload to reduce it but its back with a vengance. I would rather retain the stock fans than modify or fabricate to install aftermarket ones. Has anyone rebuilt theirs with any success? Is there a source for stock new ones? Sorry, I forgot to mention its a 79 308. |
