I got it off. The photo helped. The shop manual shows the expansion valve as a large piece that extends through the bulkhead. It actually screws into the piece that extends through the bulkhead. The shop manual is pretty sketchy on all this. After taking all the rest of the sticky tar insulation off, I could see that it screwed in and I got it off no problem. The tar was so thick and nasty that it was impossible to see that it screwed in... plus the deceiving shop manual... duuuuuuuuuuuuu |

The photo is the correct size but the connection to FC keeps getting lost when the photo is being uploaded. I will try again.

Hmmmm photo did not post. I have everything disconnected from the expansion valve that I can see. I got the temp sensor pulled off after prying and pulling all of the tar that was glued onto the expansion valve off. There is nothing attached to the visible portion of the valve that is keeping it in place. It goes through the bulkhead with a rectangular gasket sealing it. I have pried up hte gasket to try and see undernieth but I cannot find any obvious thing attaching the valve to the car. This is beginning to look like another famous Ferrari "Step One: Disassemble entire front portion of car in order to reach attachment bolt #1." Any ideas? |

Here is a pic of my expansion valve out of my 308. If you have both connections loosened it should just come right out. If you haven't removed the connection from the expansion valve to the evaporator then use 2 wrenches, one on the evaporator and one on the expansion valve. Once that is disconnected make sure that the capillary tube is disconnected from the evaporator. Then the expansion valve should lift right off. There is an o-ring on this connection too. HTHs. |

I have gotten the Sanden compressor mounted and looking good. Before taking the car to have the system charged to see if it will work, I wanted to replace the dryer and expansion valve (on the advice of you good folks). Before my project to get the air inside the car cold began, the compressor had been off the car for over 3 years with the lines at the compressor left open. I assume this means the dryer should be replaced. Is replacement of the expansion valve also required or at least a good idea? I will be using R134 instead of R12 freon.... the compressor is R134 ready. How on earth does that dang expansion valve come out of the car??? I undid the hoses attached to it but its still firmly in place. I also tried undoing 2 10mm nuts in front of it but they also appeared to have no effect so I put them back. Any idea how to get it out of the car? How about the temperature sensor that snakes up inside the car???? The parts diagram and shop manual of coarse mention nothing about procedures for removal... Help is appreciated. I really need to get this thing out of the garage and on the road! |
