Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll try to isolate the problem but at the moment its quite intermittent.

It could be the fan bearings that are worn. Try to isolate the problem with another person starting the car.

Magoo its a 348 TS (1994). Sound like a dry fan or pulley to me. I'll have to see if it becomes more regular.

Chris, I'm hoping its not the ABS as that means some major $$$.

The battery is approximately one year old. Probably due for replacment anyway (lots of a/c use).

Don't forget your master cylinder and abs system has components up front also. I'm going with one of those...

What model Ferrari is it? Battery light could be anything from a loose belt to a bad regulator to a shorted diode. Check the belt first and go from there. The screech is probably coming from some accessory that is activated when you turn the key on. Have someone else turn the key to the on position and try to pinpoint the noise.

I get a shrill screeching sound when I turn the key before firing up the engine, first thing in the morning. It seems to be coming from the front but I can't think of anything except for fans (cooling and heater system) up there. It normally dies out as soon as the engine fires up. But today the car was standing in the blazing sun for approx. 2 hours and the sound took some time to die down. Any ideas?

Also the battery light comes on at slow idle. Do I need a new one?
