Not to be too simplistic, But I had a similar situation in my Jag once, it was bad gas. Did you fill up that day? Hope it is something very minor. |

George -- before replacing anything I'd suggest that you measure the voltage at the fuel pump itself while cranking -- if it never goes +12V you know there's an electrical problem (rather than a "liquid" problem). Alternatively, you could first check that the fuse terminals indeed go +12V when cranking to get a quick look further up the +12V food chain. |

Yea, the fuse was the first thing I checked. Fuse is ok. I drove to the grocery store to get scash a check, came out, car fired up, then died, would not start, at first I thought maybe gas, so I got gas, nada....then I checked the fuse, nada...thank goodness I was only .5 mile from me X's house, so I phoned my son, and we ended pushing the 84 to the house. That's where I squirted some starting fluid...it would fire and try to run, but dies. Did that about 4 X, same result...did not want to overuse the ether routine, on my 91 Blazer, may the blazer rest in peace, wherever it is, I blew the valve covers off by useing too much ether. Anyway, yea, it has to be either the pump, filter, heaven forbid if its the fuel ECM. I was going to replace the filter first, but can't get the nut off. No leverage, I hate to drop the tank, but I may have to. |

RE: Fuel Pump Fuse....reminds me of a situation several years ago when I was trying to troubleshoot a similar situation with my old Fiero. Same exact symptoms -- had ignition, etc. and would fire if I sprayed starter fluid into the throttle body, but then would die. Checked for everything (or so I thought) -- compression, spark, etc. -- all looked good. Ended up having a flat-bed bring it to the mechanic. First thing he did was pull the fuel pump fuse -- and it was blown! Must have shorted it somehow while working on the car earlier that day. $45 for towing, plus a few extra for the mechanic just to find out it was a 10-cent fuse! Will remember that day for the rest of my life (and my wife will gladly remind me) . George...you mentioned it fires -- does it fire on it's own without the aid of starter fluid before it dies, which would seem to indicate some fuel delivery, in which case could be a defective component in the fuel delivery system? |

Have you checked your fuses, (ie FUEL PUMP FUSE)? |

George -- Are you saying it cranks and seems to fire sucessfully, but as soon as you release the starter it dies? |

have a US version, injected QV. Have ignition, fires, but won't run...fuel pump, filter, anything else to look at? And what is the trick to get the line off the filter...seems as if a gorilla tightened the top fuel line nut.
