Oh, thanks for your help Herbert. Actually I have a TR, but either way....I won't know how to get it off anyhow :(

Just waiting for my mechanic to have some free time.

The TR alternator looks like a Bosch from what I can see. If the alternator is still charging then you can still drive it. If one of the diodes fails then it will make a noise from the electrical imbalance but will still charge. If two or more fail then it will not charge. I am not an authority on the repair of a 348 since all I have ever owned is a 308 so I cannot help on the removal of the alternator.

That's cool. You have a lot of pictures on the service of the TR.

I can take it apart, but I'll never put it back together, :(

Ya, I know where the alternator is, but I don't know how difficult it is for me to take it out and put back in.

My mechanic is so busy though. Damn.

James

Oh, so is my car ok to drive, I assume the system is not going to be charging my batteries?? Should I drive it? It drives alright right now.....just trying to make an appointment with my mechanic.

Not sure who or how much this helps but here are 2 pics of my alternator (out of a 90 TR).

I had it in hand and either failed to write down the info or wrote it down and subsuquently discarded (lost) it.

Herbert can you identify it from the pics above?

I would love to take a picture of it. :) But I don't think I know how to remove it.

I don't work on my own car, but I would love to :(

Thanks for your help though Herbert.

Unless you like to tell me how to remove it and put it back :D

If you have the Delco alternator still on your car I can supply a heavy duty rectifier for it depending on the type of alternator it is. If I could see a picture of it I can tell the model and supply parts. All you need is a good solder gun to replace it. I told someone else this on an earlier post but never heard back. You would not believe the markup on alternators and their parts. If I knew the new type alternator that they replace the Delco with I bet I can supply it too at a bargain.

Cool, failed diode [rectifier bridge], hmm rectifier.....

Anyhow, that's weird that the alternator is having problems, I just had it rebuilt like couple month ago.

Thanks, Herbert for the diagnosis.

Is my car safe to drive?

Sorry I missed the ride guys, I know some other local (Bay Area) Ferrari owners (and FC.com readers) were in Yosemite for the weeknd doing an FCA event, we'll have to get another gathering together. I recently had my alternator out as well and was WARNED very strongly not to do such an "upgrade", even tho it is a A/C Delco alternator. While I don't know enough about alternators to tell you if this is related to your "upgrade", I do think Herbert has nailed it on the nose. Sorry to hear about your trouble. Let us know what becomes of it.

James,

Sorry to hear about your car. Be thankful that you didn't follow us for the rest of the trip. Larry took us through this extremely narrow and winding road at "very spirited" driving. I could barely keep up as I'm still getting used to my car.

It would of totally sucked if your car had died there because we were in the middle of nowhere!

You have perfectly described a failed diode [rectifier bridge]in your alternator.

I need some help with this problem.

I went for a long ride in the mountains with some pals on this board. Then the car got kind of hot, but no overheating and everything seems fine. It was a great ride, Three 348 and my TR.

Later that night. This problem occurred.

Here is the problem.

At Idle, the Battery Warning Light is on (not too bright) like I am going to stall, but it doesn't stall.

Through out all gears the light is constantly on, very dim. As I accelerate, the light goes off (still on slightly) and as RPMS drop the light gets brighter.

However, the car has power through out all gears, everything sounds like it's running fine. Fans working, all gauges, etc.

At idle and first gear, as I accelerate, I hear like a electrical hum pitch sound as I accelerate, but above 2nd or 3rd gear - it doesn't sound like it's there. Perhaps the engine is too loud at higher speeds and I can't
notice the electrical hum.

I need some help, is it the starter? charging system? my alternator? (I just recently had my alternator rebuilt and upgraded amperage, so I don't think it's that)

Someone please shine some light on this

Thanks!!

James

(Hope my baby is fine, it runs fine except for the annoying light and the electrical hum in first gear, like I am driving an electric car)
